Noob 7 button layout question!
« on: February 23, 2010, 06:00:02 am »
Hi,

I'm newish to the forum and am just about to start my first MAME cab. Quick question though, and it's probably a silly one. I'm struggling in my mind to work out how the 7 button layouts I'm seeing here are wired up.

4 buttons on the bottom row (Neo Geo layout) and 3 above (fighting game layout).

How's the Neo Geo layout A, B, C & D buttons wired up?

Surely the fighting layout has the punch buttons on he top row, so in the MAME cabs with 7 buttons, how are things wired up?

I hope this question makes sense!

You can assign buttons for every game individually if you like.

+1 with Kman...

dont over engineer it...Make the layout that you want, then assign what buttons you want to do what in the Mame program...

Might stick to the 6 button fighter layout then. Cheers.

Good luck with it. Post pictures.
If I ever remake my CP I'll make it a 4 button CP.

If you do an ergonomic offset 6-button layout the 4th neo geo button is very easy to reach.  Besides, I think only the fighters use all 4 buttons, right?  You'd have to really really love neo geo fighting games to design your CP around them...

Well to an extent yes, but the functionality of the 7th button is for more then just NeoGeo. I personally use the ABC of the neogeo layout for games like NBA Jam , 2 on 2 open Ice,etc ,and most 3 button games.  Its just a more natural feel but if you dont think it'll be needed then dont add it.  I do play A LOT of NeoGeo and NBA Hangtime so I have a skewed perspective

I find this works great (but I'm not huge into neo geo fighters):

This thread has shots of my layout, which is different than everyone's here (and I'm still not sure if I like it after two years)

not mine, but this the general idea:

the 7th button is also a great run button in MK3/UMK3

this is what was meant by an offset 6 button layout:

I will likely go 6 buttons on my current CP but another nice feature of the slightly offset (towards the joystick) 7th button in the picture above is that it makes a great reverse button for Defender/Stargate...but again you'd really have to be in to those two games to like it for just that ;)

Actually, you can have the best of both worlds.  If you decide to go with the 7 button layout, with button 7 on the lower left, you don't have to program all Neo Geo Games individually in MAME.  You can set MAME to "automagically" reassign the buttons whenever you run a Neo Geo game.   :applaud:

So this:
  1 2 3
  4 5 6
7

Would automatically become this when a Neo Geo Game is selected for play:
  2 3 4
1

All you have to do is edit your mame.ini file to point to a separate .ini file that has the key assignment.  Pretty simple actually.  I'm not home at the moment, but I can post my .ini file to show what I did.

Edit:  Found the link on how to do it here

Search for CFG Magician.  It will sort out all of your game specific configuration problems!
