Button diameters...
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:13:44 am »
I'm planning to CNC some control panels for my cocktail cabinet and was wondering whether the diameter of the holes required for Happ/clones and Sanwa/Seimitsu/clones were the same?

I (think) the holes have to be 29mm in diameter for Happ-style buttons but is this the same for Sanwa-style?

Happ/clones require 1 1/8" which is 28.575. You can get away with a 28mm Forstner etc bit if you were drilling them in a wood panel but they can be a little tight.

Sanwa/Seimitsu action buttons require a 30mm hole.

If you are getting them CNC routed/milled I imagine the holes will be circle interpolated so if you are using Happ buttons (why?  :D) get them cut 28.5mm or 30mm for Seimitsu/Sanwa.

You can mount a Happ button in a Sanwa/Seimitsu hole but not vice versa.

Note both button styles have a 33mm outer bezel so they take up the same space on the top side of the panel.

Cheers Franco...

Yeah, I wasn't sure... Sanwas/Seimitsus crap all over Happ-style in my books but then I want sympathetic aesthetics and Happs look more 'retro' if you will. Also, I don't think you can player 1 and 2-style Sanwa/Seimitsu-style buttons can you?

So, from this 30mm holes would be best - can fit either that way...

I'm going to ask my mate if he can CNC me 4 metal plates (clones of the originals but with more button holes/different layout) - you may ask 4? Well, sets of 2 (for 2 players) then one design for home use (designed by myself) - so something arcade-y and nice-looking and also, some for office/studio use - so perhaps branded by us, advertising the business, incorporating our logo, etc... and with a credit button perhaps as we won't be able to charge customers otherwise we'll run into licensing trouble!

No worried bud. Yeah you may as well go with 30mm then you can use whatever. You will need to centralise Happ buttons in a San/Sei hole but its not a big problem.

Yeah Happ look more retro and I can see why you want to go down that route. I changed out all the controls on my old school Jamma woody for JLWs and Seimitsu buttons. Much better IMO :)

As for the start buttons I'm not aware that you can get Jap ones. You could do what I did though and get some 30mm buttons with a translucent plunger and insert your own graphic in it.

I have crap loads of these start button logos that fit in the buttons if you want any.

Yeah, I can remember your post over at Otaku in relation to these... :) Where did you source the translucent buttons from out of interest? If I stick some Japanese-styles in the cocktail cab I think they'd certainly be nicer to use! I do have stack of Happ clones and old skool ball tops anyhow that look quite nice so I may just use those but it depends on the CPO designs I finally come up with! Your Neo Naomi does look awesome I've got to say - absolutely stunning and the design works so well! :notworthy:

Depending on time restraints, etc, I may be interested in some of those player 1 and 2 designs - if I have the time, I'll probably knock out some designs out myself depending on the CPO designs I manage to design for home/office use - appreciate the offer either way fo sho! :)

You're a busy chap with the marquee holders as well! ;D How's that all going? Hopefully be in contact about the 4 I mentioned very soon! I know I'll definitely want them - keen to get my cabs finished so that when I get my own place sorted they look the business!

This arcade hobby is definitely fun/time consuming/stressful/rewarding! The kind of hobby I love! ;D

Cheers dude, I haven't got any finish pics up yet. I'm planning on once its finally on location this weekend. It may be up for sale in a couple of months though unless I can find another place for it to go on location  :'(

The buttons are Seimitsu PS-14-KNs which I got from Gremlin Solutions [Linky]

You are welcome to the button graphics, as is anyone else, just PM me. I got about 50 of each printed along with my marquee and I will never use personally use all of them.

(Edit: The graphics are pro printed on vinyl just FYI)

Yeah the marquee holders are coming along great thanks. Its taken a lot of R&D but I'm finally happy with the finished products. I have the Naomi's, Egret/ASWDs ready to ship from tomorrow and I will have the Astros ready to ship in about a week thanks to Mountain

Yeah this hobby is everything you describe. I just looking forward to working on my keeper cab at some point in the future  :)

Haha, yeah... don't forget to play them sometime! ;) In fact, I'm going to have a game in a minute because I'm just as guilty!

Ta for the link... I'm thinking about designs for the control panels as we speak... I started a thread based on a 15 minute sketch up - any suggestions, feedback or anything else is definitely welcome! It's here -

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=100026.0

It certainly needs some work but it's finding the time!

Good luck with the siting - I hope it works out for you - I always considered doing it myself but with too many fingers in too many pies I thought I'd best not! Let us all know how it goes... and if the worst comes to the worse I have no doubts that they'll potentially be a lot of interest in that cab - it really does look good!

When I do get some marquee holders from you it'll be lovely to have a row of candies set out like they should be! They look tops! :)
