How to set IPAC to use ESC/TAB key?
« on: May 18, 2003, 07:33:19 pm »
I guess cuz the cab is now up and running, I've just 'tarded out on this one.

Is there a way using the new WINPAC programming tool to set up some extra wired buttons (Wired to player 4 buttons 7 and 8 on an IPAC54) to be the ESC and TAB keys.

HOw does I do this...

...oh

...
..
oh wait...do I just select the button and hit the TAB or ESC keys on the keyboard I've got plugged in?
Is it..that simple? :P

Select the key with the mouse and hit the keyboard key to assign.  Simple.  Then of course you have to save your selections.

no..wait....if I click the key on the screen......it only shows the default buttons (ie: 4 way joystick and buttons 1 - 8.

It doesn't allow me to click on an ESC key and then press the button on my control panel I want to be "ESCAPE" or "TAB".

What obvious step am I missing here..!?!?!?

I haven't looked at the new utility yet.  With that said, don't you select the button, THEN press ESC?

I think what is missing here is.  Select the button with your mouse then click the key you want assigned to it.  Select first then then use keyboard.

Its gotta be the paint fumes down here ;)...

Ok, in the new Utility...you open it up and its got, essentially, what amounts to a graphical layout of your Player 1 joystick.  a Start Button, a Coin Button, and 8 regular buttons are listed in the app.

You click once on the screen, say, on button 1.  That puts it into "ready to receive" mode.
Then, on your control panel, you push whatever button you want to represent player 1 button 1.

See, the way this application is layed out (The new one, I havent used the old one) I'd need to see an ESCAPE button listed in the gui.  Then I'd click on the ESC button, THEN press the button on my CP that I want to represent the "ESC" key.

Only problem is, there IS no ESC button......if I right-click on the buttons it gives you a limited menu to select "BLANK" (or none), "POWER", "APPLICATION"...and 1 or two others..but no Tab, no ESC.

Hmmmmmmm.........

You don't push a button on your control panel at all. You select a button in the utility then press the key you want to program it to on your KEYBOARD. Then save it. This is also assuming you have the jumper on the iPac set to Alt and not Mame.

You can assign ESC to any of the 10 or so buttons and 4 joystick directions.   EG pick 4 and hit esc.   I dont think you can change your esc key on the keyboard to another button.  It is only changing the IPAC assignments.  The esc key has to be wired to any of the buttons on the ipac and then assigned to esc.

Ummmm.  Ok, so then am I COMPLETELY USING THE UTILITY THE WRONG WAY!???

I fire Andy's WinIPAC up................I see joysticks for players 1 and 2, and then a bunch of buttons for each.

With the jumper set to ALT, I would click on the joystick button 1....and then I'd press the button on my CP that I wanted to "MAP" to Player 1 Fire 1.

Am I completely using this thing the wrong way????

Yes, you are.  You press button on the utility, that represents an input from your CP.  You then press a KEYBOARD key to map that button to.

....ok....

I think I "get it" now......I'll go try this again.....

I guess this info will solve every one of my problems...except for the rather stupid problem of not being able to get my tulip-tipped HAPPS joystick buttons to work.  I've got the microswitches actuating and everything.......two tulip-tipped sticks, and two buttons that wont work.  I'll check em out with a voltmeter to make sure they're working ok.

Ok...I went back and tried it...you're right, I was going about it all wrong :)
Thanks everyone for taking the time to explain it to me.

However, I've still got some problems.

Player 3 and 4 have tulip-button topped HAPPS sticks.  Neither of the buttons is working.
The microswitches for the top-buttons are clicking, and they are wired correctly...but the IPAC wont register them.  It doesn't see any signal.  This is also the case on the momentary switch buttons that I'm trying to assign to ESC and TAB (Wired into Player 4's 7 and 8 button slots).

Player 3 button 5 (button in the stick), not working...
Player 4, button 5 (button in the stick) also...not working.

Player 4 button 7 and 8, both momentary-switch buttons from radioshack......neither will register on the IPAC.

I've mailed Andy to see if he's seen this before.  Tomorrow before I "nail down" the top of the panel to the control box, I'll test the switches with the voltmeter just to make sure its not them.
