What cab is this? Cocktail!
« on: February 01, 2010, 01:20:50 pm »
Okay... I took a risk at this... I didn't even ask any questions or anything - and the item description is shockingly inadequate but on a plus note, I guess at least the seller has 100% good feedback... anyway, haven't got a clue as to what it is... probably seems quite daft - and it is! - but I've been trying to source a cocktail all week and lots of my plans have fallen through - this was a last minute decision!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320479735595&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1182

Anyone got an idea?

Also, what wiring harness this might have? Jamma? I doubt it...

I'm hoping I can restore this and probably rewire it to jamma... then either just have a J-Pac and modded Xbox set-up or stick in a board when I feel like it. I'm hoping I can do a nice enough job to have this in our studio/office when our business sets up shop... it will be a nice focal point for visitors.

Just hope it isn't a heap - it could well be as I know naff all about the condition of it or anything - oh well - I didn't pay much so fingers crossed it will exceed expectations (which I have to say are fairly low at the moment!)

Bidding ended, so can't really see it.

But from what I did see, it looks like a homemade cocktail cabinet.  Looked like cheap wood panel sides with a custom CPO.

Mmm... interesting theory... you could be right... I guess what I'm hoping for as a minimum is that the monitor works and that the case is okay... hopefully it has legs...  ::)

If the worst comes to the worst I'll just jamma-fy it and j-pac it. Customise it.

You really can't help yourself can you Jon?  :D

That has got to be one of the most vague auction listings ever. Some people really have no idea how to list an item.

These are the pics from the auction:

There is no way that was home made. If it was it was expertly done decades ago.

You can see from all the mounting hardware, CP etc that it is a commercial cabinet.

My guess is that its a Space Invaders clone.

I have no idea if it will be Jamma or not, you will have to have a look at the harness etc when you pick it up.

It's a problem Franco... an addiction... ;D

I know you've got it too though! ;) :laugh2:

Anyway, as I said before, this will most likely have some importance as I really want it to go in our design studio eventually... it'll look the piece and really add something.

I have to agree with you - it looks too good to be homemade... and from my (limited) knowledge of this kind of thing - a Space Invaders clone sounds about right... Attack UFO (I think it 's called) sounds like the culprit - however, I have no idea what loom that used! Wiring it for jamma shouldn't be too tricky though hopefully.

The guy has just contacted me and IT DOES come with legs (phew!) - possibility I'm collecting this tomorrow - if I do, I'll post up some details/pics.

I can't believe I've taken the risk though - it could be a real heap and I would advise people to do their research in this situation. Fingers crossed this might be a decent buy - or at least, I hope it is! The price certainly was right anyhow (well, as long as it isn't a total crapheap!)

God only knows why people list like this - it's just asking for trouble/low ending prices!

I don't know...that REALLY looks like a homemade cab to me!    :laugh2:

Yes, there are rails inside- but that's not that hard to make.

The odd orientation of the monitor doesn't look like any cocktail I've ever seen!

It's definitely not homemade.

Looks like a generic Taito cab to me. They used to be really common in the UK. Most of them ran one of the Space Invaders variants, or Lunar Rescue.

If it's in reasonable condition then I'd say you got a bargain.

Cheers guys... appreciate the feedback! That's the problem with listings like that... could be a real bargain or it could be a total dump... the ambiguity means it is never likely to go for much though... we'll have to wait and see... best start making a move to get my collections sorted out tomorrow... :P

Tah Dah!

Collected today. Absolutely knackered... carrying this upstairs by my (skinny) self wasn't a good idea!

Overall, condition is pretty bloody good... not minty or anything but I'd never expect it to be. £52 is a bargain! (I didn't have change!) Plugged it in and the monitor turns white so it looks promising! No PCB so I can't try it yet. Not sure what kind of harness it is - I've included a picture below - if anyone could tell me that would be a real help! Overall, I'm really happy with this. Silly, silly money for a really nice cab. This will look the nuts in our office/studio! ;D

Looks like a standard 44 pin.

Does it look to have a color or black/white monitor in it ?

Can't tell if I'm honest... I'm swayed to say a black and white but have no reason to say that... just a feeling... I'll count the pins - I'm sure it's smaller than jamma...

DEFINITELY smaller than JAMMA and no where near the same pinout.

Look to see if there are like 5 or 6 wires coming off that harness going to the monitor.

The colours mentioned are definitely coming off the monitor... does that mean it's colour? Be nice if it did? I was looking on the web and saw this -

http://www.jammaboards.com/store/jamma-pcb-to-pacman-cabinet-adapter/prod_273.html

You were right... it's a 44pin (one of the cables has come loose so I'll have to resolder it)... would this adaptor be suitable? I would have to obviously opt for the ATX PSU as well...

Thanks for the info so far!

You'll need to figure out the wiring pinout on your connector before you can just jump up and buy an adapter.
i.e. - What's the wiring pinout for "UFO" ?

A Pac-Man adapter may be 44 pins and "fit", but it may not be wired the same.

You bagged a bargain there mate.

Its commercial, as my ex had one in her hotel but it was a hunchback.

Maybe it was manufactured in the UK back in 83.

Ah, cheers for the info... I never realised it worked like that... I'd always assumed it worked in much the same way as jamma standard... bit of a pain but I guess it won't be too tricky to figure out the pinout if I trace the wires!

Thanks for the info! Just looking at it, you can tell it's manufactured - it's pretty well made. Nice little cocktail!

By the way... going on the cabinet, I'm going for Attack UFO being the game...

although I don't think it is... there is a small chance it could be 'Defend the Terra Attack on the Red UFO' as well...
