Legal PacMan/Galaxian/Dig Dug ROMs coming
« on: July 23, 2003, 07:09:54 pm »
FYI - I was getting my t-molding when I noticed this.  It's a forthcoming product similar to the 10 Atari games in a joystick that you may have seen.  It will include 5 of the old Namco games, including PacMan, Galaxian, & Dig Dug.  I'm sure this is just a mini-emulator with the ROMs inside.

Thus it appears this is a legal way (without buying the original boards) to get these soon.

Sounds just like those Atari controllers and NES light guns that hook directly to the RCA video-in of your TV. Easy portability.

Edit---> didn't notice the other ones already on their website.

Too bad this looks like an N64 controller...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=*****&category=31534

I wonder if you can hack it into a control panel? Shouldn't be too tough... still more portable than anything I've built.

edit-> I removed the link.... it was a MegaJoy II on ebay..
2000 in 1 games... obviously running MAME. Just wonder what kind of computer they could possibly squeeze into something the size of an N64 controller  ???

The NAMCO stick came out a few weeks ago.  All Gamestops should carry them.  At the one I manage we sold out of our first batch.  Haven't tried it myself tho.

That looks kinda goofy to play on...

but, since it supposedly contains the original games,  does owning this make us legally entitled to own the roms for Mame?

I bet it does, but I'm not a lawyer...  I think we're legally entitled to convert or modify software so as to enable it to run on the system of our choice.  Anybody here know better?

Well we'd have to read the license on the little box... but odds are, no... they usually have some clause like , "for use in the intended system only" ... and fair use get's papered over in EULA's and DMCA so much it's not even... well fair anymore.

but that's really a debate for lawyers, and politicians... (although by right, my vote would be for hell YES!)

No. They are not the same image (ROMs) you have sitting on your computer. As for converting them, the Digital Millenium Act basicly made reverse engineering illegal.

That MegaJoy was running an NES clone. 2000 games? No, just 20 duplicated 1000 times.

I thought Namco already sold ROM packs for use on the PC? Hanaho (or what ever) sells them with their arcade controllers. If you really want it legitimate... go buy it.

Has anyone else noticed this? Bosconian is an 8-way game, so the joystick must be an 8-way.

This means playing Pac-Man with an 8-way! Not acceptable.

There isn't any law against hacking it into your control panel and playing the games on the orginal device in your cab.  ;D
