PacDrive + Xbox360? possible?
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:55:27 pm »
I searched the forum but couldn't find anything about this:

I built my MAME bartop so that I could also play Xbox360 games on it (hacked an xbox pad, used an LCD screen etc.), recently got myself a Pac-Drive and some LEDs. Now, since Mushihimesama Futari has been released on the xbox, all I ever do is play xbox, so I was wondering what happens if I plug in the Pac-Drive into the xbox via the USB-port. Probably nothing - I guess the real question is: is there any way to get the xbox to power the Pac-Drive so I can at least get my LEDs to burn all the time (by this I mean: I can't really ask for an attract mode/ flashing buttons & I'd be quite happy if my buttons simply glowed)?

Cheers!

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

You don't need the pacdrive for that. Just supply them with power.

Um, yeah, but won't connecting the LEDs to two power sources at once result in problems?

You will be using one power source according to what you said above.

Just get a wall wart of the appropriate power, strip the end, and wire it up.

But the whole point of the pacdrive is to be able to turn stuff on and off. You would need a dll for the xbox to do that. Or whatever the equivalent is for Linux, if that's what you're running.

If you just want to keep LED's lit when the system is on, then the pacdrive is of no use to you.

Ok, I just re-read his post, so let me make sure I have this straight:
you have MAME set up plus an Xbox360 in your bartop? A PC and an XBOX?

Maybe you could rig up a switch to change from the pac-drive to a constant power source. Hmm, but everything isn't daisy chained due to the way the pac-drive sends power to each light. The only thing I can think of is to leave the computer running while you're playing Xbox360.

Sorry for not being clear on this, but yeah, I've got a laptop running Mame + MaLa in my bartop. The pac-drive will be programmed via MaLa, so everything will flash'n stuff.

Well cheers for your help, maybe I'll really leave teh laptop on when playing xbox & simply use a setting where every LED is lit all the time.

IMPORTANT NOTE for people who hacked pads for their arcade controls and used more than one pad for multi-system compatibility: it is very important that only one pcb (from the pads you hacked) is powered on/ plugged in at the same time, or else, from what I've read, it's entirely possible they will be destroyed! Take extra care that only one of the hacked pads is plugged in at the same time!
