How do I know what ROM set I have?
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:04:42 am »
I'm just now getting into CoinOps (MAME for the XBOX) and apparently all MAME releases for the XBOX are based on the .84 core and therefor require a romset of .84...  I've got a romset that I'm fairly certain is in the vicinity of .84 but I don't know for sure and I'd rather not download a full set again if I don't have to so I'm wondering if there's some way of figuring out what romset it is that I have.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

You definitely won't have to re-download a set.  You can use clrmamepro to rebuild your set to .84 regardless of what version you have.  Depending on what changed from your set to .84, regardless of if your set is older or newer, all you will need to download are the changes from .84 to your set.

Oh, right.  I feel kinda dumb right about now.  I've used clrmamepro before, it's just been so long I forgot entirely about it.  Oh well, now hopefully this thread will come up easily in future searches by noobs.

While we're on the subject of my lack of knowledge...  Does clrmamepro (or any other program for that matter) have any option to sort roms that are dependent on, lets say, neogeo.zip?  I want to make a romset that contains just MVS games and doing that the old fashioned way will take forever!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but clrmamepro doesn't change the roms back to an older version.  As far as I know, it checks the hash to verify that it will work with a certain version of MAME and copies it to a specified directory.  As a result, you will have a set that will fully work with 0.84, but you won't have a COMPLETE set if there are any redumps that are newer than 0.84 in your current set.

But using clrmamepro will tell you what you need to bring the set to .84.  That's the rebuilding part that I mentioned.  It's the first step in converting your roms to another version accounting for any changes.

crashwg, will Romlister sort by your criteria?  Maws may be able to do that also.

Maws shows 241 entries for the driver: neodrvr.c
Some of those weren't added until after .84 though.
