X Arcade Trackball
« on: January 13, 2010, 03:40:03 am »
Ok, so im in the middle of putting all my hardware together before i start my build,

I Have just received an XArcade Trackball, and now im just wondering if i have done the right thing, And have a few quick questions (That must have been answered a million times, but searching for answers is a nightmare)

1. What is the best way to make this sit flush with my pannel ??

2. How the hell do i hook this up ??

It has keyboard and USB connections, and a hell of a lot of other wires attached (including 2 buttons and 2 Microswitches)

Have i done the right thing ??? Im hoping so !!!

Any help would be fantastic, and i can only appoligise if this has been asked a million times before

Thanks

Mr.Ian

1. Unique design requires NO MOUNTING PLATE. Simply use a router to cut out 5-7/8” by 5-7/8” down to ¼”. Cut 2-7/8” hole for lip/ball. Smart design, easy to install!

I don't think that it matters if you are using on arcade or with a console.  I think that the only difference is that if you are using with a console you have to have an adapter.  From what I understand it should be pretty much plug and play for MAME.  That said, I have never actually seen one in person before.

Just plug it in via USB and it will be recognised, it is just a mouse. You can use the additional wires to wire up left and right click and assign them to actual functions in Golden Tee etc.

As for mounting, either you need some awesome jigsaw skills, a massive drill bit or a router.

Cut out the hole and screw her in

1. What is the best way to make this sit flush with my panel ??

I did it with a router (for removing material where the case sits) and a 2 7/8 hole cutter for the ball itself. The hardest part for me was finding a 2 7/8" hole cutter. It's generally not at your big box stores but I found it at Amazon in the end:

Can I ask how you think they feel compared to other trackballs. I have heard they feel a bit too Mousy rather than free flowing like and arcade track ball, but just thought I would ask

I have two and I love them. I think they do need a it of a break in period to loosen up, but I imagine an new trackball would.

Intgeresting. Might get one, the price is certainly right. I mainly want them for golden tee.

My new cab has a steel control panel so won't need to route it either :)

They often have "refurbed" units as well, for 1/2 price. They have such good support (anything breaks they send you a replacement) that I didn't hesitate to order a refurb'd unit.

My cab has a steel control panel. I ended up taking it to a local fab shop to get the hole for the trackball cut. I'm lucky because I live in backwoods Wisconsin, and the small town I live in had a 70 year old guy there who was better with his century old metal tools than any laser cutter is today. Once I explained what I needed, he went to work while I watched. He had a perfect hole cut for me in 10 minutes flat. And when I say perfect, I mean PERFECT. When I got home, I almost couldn't install the trackball, the fit was so tight. Turns out I was inserting it at a 10 degree angle. That was enough for it not to go in. Started over from flat and she slid in the hole and pretty much 'snapped' into place. I couldn't have been happier.

Guy charged me $10 :D

Get thee to a small metal shop, if you can find one.

p.s. If I'm not mistaken the X-arcade trackballs are modeled after the Betson Imperial hardware. They are good units -- my previous cab had one.

Man, will my cab EVER be finished?

I was told the same also (was thinking of upgrading to a lighted trackball @ the time). I have the Tankstick and at first there was a break-in period...Found out that my 3 year old was breaking it in for me while I was at work...Now it is totally flawless...
good luck with your build!
