Laminate
« on: January 03, 2010, 07:32:42 pm »
I just went to lowe's and their laminate selection sucks!  Maybe it's just the area I live in.  Does anyone know where I can get some good/cheap/thin black laminate for my cab?

Hello, I'm new here, but I just picked up some laminate.  I only needed enough for the control panel, so I went to a local business that makes custom cabinets and store displays and they gave me a left over piece for free.  For a different project, I got a 4x4 piece for $5 from a flooring and interior store (another left over piece from one of their projects).

If you need full sheets, call an interior design store that does counters and cabinets with laminate, and they can order whatever color their laminate supplier offers.  If the first place you call doesn't work with laminate, just ask for a referral - that's how I got the free piece.  And make sure you ask to look through their cut offs and left overs, you might find what you need at a great price.

I found mine at a tile and countertop store. I think it was the cheapest laminate they sold  :)

Agree.  Find a place that does kitchen countertops.  They will probably do laminate counters, and will have a Formica or Wilsonart display in their sample area (usually little rectangle samples).  If they do you can sometimes buy materials direct from them (tell them you want to DIY your own counters and just need material).  Or you can take the little sample strip from the store, go to Lowe's or HD and ask them if they can order you a roll of it (the strip will have a number on the back).

I've worked with Wilsonart a few times.  Durable stuff, adds about 1/16" thick per side when applied with rolled contact cement.  I usually get it in 4'x8' rolls.  Local countertop place charges about $2/sqft (something like $60 for a 4x8 sheet), but they do have a fast turnaround.  Could probably get it at Lowes or HD cheaper.
