How do I wire this thing!?
« on: December 31, 2009, 05:16:05 pm »
OK, so I am hoping for some serious help from your guys if you could lend me a hand at all I would appreciate it! I have no prior wiring/electrical experience and am seriously confused and not sure where to start or what to do.

So I am ready to put all the components into my cab in the coming days, but have literally NO idea how to wire everything up. The cab is a Midway 2-on-2 Open Ice Hockey cabinet which I have gutted completely except for the speakers and the marquee light. The monitor has been removed but seems to be in great working order so I am putting it back in once work on the cab is done and want to have it wired back up with a J-pac.

My goal at the the end of this is to have the following items powered:

Marquee Light - this was connected with 2 wires with a connector at the end but have no idea how to properly wire this now.

The PC parts - this is all powered with the power supply from the gutted PC I'm using and shouldn't be a problem.

The monitor - this is my biggest concern as I do not know how to power this beast and due to the fact taht the cab originally had it running to (what I believe to be) an isolation transformer, I am even more concerned. I could really use some help as to how to properly wire this thing and ensure it is done correctly.

The coin door slots/leds - I dont know how to get these wired as they were never connect to begin with and I have nothing to follow.

So I recently jumped the gun and purchased a replacement power supply (see the link below) for the one that came with the cab, thinking this was needed. I have since been told its not needed, but dont know what IS needed then. Is it possible to use the new power supply I just bought for anything of any great importance, or should I just return it?

I currently have:

- PC power supply
- New replacement Power supply from original cab (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=233)
- Marquee light installed with original wiring
- Original coin door with what appear to be most connections/wires
- Monitor - has JAMMA harness connected but also a billion other wires and I am absolutely terrified to start on this until I have full ability to follw through and correctly do it

ANYONE who could show me a decnet walk-through, lend a hand, or give me any insight as to where to start and if I have what I need or not. ANYTHINg would be appreciated!

I can't help much, but for the coin door lights, I followed these instructions to run them from the PC power supply:

Well that does really hep for the coin door. Thanks so much for the link.

I still don't know about so much of this though. It seems nearly impossible to find anyone who is willing to take the time or effort to really help. I'm starting to feel defeated :(

A seemingly common misconception is that the original switching PS is required to run marquee lights, power the monitor, etc. It isn't -- those run off of normal AC power (OK, there are some exceptions and I'm looking at you, Nintendo), although they are sometimes connected to the input connections on the PS because it is convenient. You definitely want an ISO on that monitor, unless you know for a fact that your monitor doesn't require one.

It may seem a little overwhelming at first, but I always recommend reading Bob Robert's page on cabinet wiring:

http://homearcade.org/BBBB/buildit.html

His design does a good job showing the various components and how they are powered. If you are putting a PC in, then you can just ignore the PS in the diagram below.

Now, you say that you want to connect the monitor using a JPac, which implies that you will be rewiring the cabinet JAMMA (which is what I do for all of my MAME boxes). Bob has a decent article on JAMMA wiring:

http://homearcade.org/BBBB/jh.html

You will still need to get your video card to drive the proper frequency and resolutions, but that is covered pretty well in the Monitor FAQ and wiki.

So that does shed a little more light on what I am trying to do. Although now that I have the same PS that was originally in the cab (only new), and the isolation transformer from prior to the gutting of the cab, can I not use these for the monitor, and the other PS just for the PC and marquee?

I have taken a few pics of the PS and the ISO (or what I believe is the ISO) so someone could help possibly?

So I have seen on the monitor where this PS connects, but still have no clue as to how to connect or make use of the ISO?
