nlited xp or regular windows 7?
« on: December 26, 2009, 01:58:10 pm »
I am building a new mame cab and I bought this hardware, I am going to run 64 bit and need to know which would be best...

An N-lited version of windows xp pro 64-bit
or stock (since there is not a "lite" program for 7 that i know of?) windows 7 home premium

Obviously a lite version helps because less stuff is running, but windows 7 im guessing makes better use of 64 bit and dual cores. Here is my hardware:

Amd Athlon II X2 250 Dual Core 3.0ghz
2gb ddr2 Ram
500gb sata

Any suggestions?

Just keep xp

your not even gonna see or use the new features when running the front end over it and you may run into compatibility issues

well i was planning on turning off most of the visual aspects of windows 7 (aero, peek, etc)

but you dont think the bare perfomance enhancements would be worth it? (seeing as dual core and 64 bit is now a major focus)

There is a Tiny 7 available from usual sources.   It is not available in 64 bit and probably will not be.

I would stick with XP.  There really is no compelling technical reason to use Win7 over nLited XP for an arcade cab.  As a previous poster mentioned, with Win7 you also take the risk of having compatibility issues.

Apparently nLite and vLite are abandoned now...Anyway, if you care about stripping parts of Windows 7, I suggest you to check vLite forums: http://www.msfn.org/board/vlite-f153.html You'll find some guides there, although I cannot recommend any specific.

Considering that Vista is usually pointed as better than XP on 64-bit, maybe 7 would be a good try. However, you may fall on compatibility issues as everyone suggested. On this sense, I would try Ultimate (Professional maybe?) as it has the XP compatibility mode - home editions don't have it.
