What would be the best way to mount this (i have the Oscar Mounting plate) so screws are flush with the wood (plan to do overlay and lexan).

Not sure what you are looking for?   To mount the joystick to the mounting plate. It only fits one way.  The short sides of the mounting plate is on the top and bottom and the long sides are to the left and right.

To make it flushed, as I have seen it in other posts with pictures, take the router and and put it on top of the plate with the bit part over the edge of the plate or in the center hole. Have the bit drop to the wood, then tighten it.  You have the thickness of the plate right there to route on the control panel.  

From my understand is that the mounting plate has bolts already welded on so it can be tricky.  Find something that has the same thickness as the mounting plate such as a notebook.   Otherwise on a scrap board drill four holes for the bolts on the plate and put the plate on it then the router on the plate to set the bit.

However in another post, I also read that you have to remove the stick on the joystick to put the plate and lexan on then the stick in.  It is very important to note the order of the pieces when you disassemble the stick.

My plate does not come with pre-welded (sp??) bolts. I know which way it goes but I am struggling with mounting so nothing shows. You see if I route out the thickness of the mounting plates (so its flush with the CP) the bolts that hold the mounting plate to the joystick will still show.

EDIT* This is what I have been thinking of doing. Do you think it will weaken the wood too much cause it will have to be routed pretty close to the surface cause of the short length of the shaft. See pic

That part about the bolts still showing is something I have dealt with.  Get it welded on so it is like the Happs trackball mounting plate.  They have 4 corner bolts welded on.  That's what you need to do.  Find someone with experience and a welding equipment.  At the end you will have 8 bolts welded on.  With 4 holes for the restrictor plates. But those 4 holes will be covered and not a bother if you put lexan on top.

Gee I am speaking of what I plan to do. I haven't actually done it yet!    I am taking my time to get everything in order so that the control panel has everything flushed with the exception of carriage bolts on the outside edges to hold down the lexan.  I don't plan to have any in the middle area since the buttons will help hold it down.

I was just going to have no bolts holding the lexan down cause I figured the buttons would do the job. Then again I have a lot of buttons (4player setup).

or go ahead an order the oscar mounting plate with headless bolts. Hmmm... I wonder if you can just buy headless bolts

Of course they were not completely flush on my control panel... but they were pretty darn close... needed more primer.

Is the mounting plate not on that picture? Or is the joystick the same width as the mounting plate (that would be bad)?

The mounting plate should be wider than the joystick. You route 1/8" or so from the top so the mounting plate is flush. You make a pocket cut the size of the joysticks width. You dril holes for the mounting plates bolts to go thru. You attach the mounting plate to the top of control panel so it rests in the routed out section. You then mount the joystick thru the bottom of the control panel in the pocket cut.

There are no bolt heads on mine. Not on the mounting plate.

OH ok, I saw the site, so headless bolts will make it completely flush with the CP right? Excellent, my CP will be completely boltless mawahahhahaha.

The headless that you see is just the part where it goes on the CP. you will still have bolts for the joystick that sticks up.  To make it flush, like I said you need to find someone to weld the bolts on to make it headless like the bolts for the CP.

shoot... looks like you're right. They look just like the bolts for the restrictor. Probably should stop screwing around while at work . . .

Not quite...I ended up doing a few minor changes (ie. to accomodate Oscar's restrictor plates), and then the place doing them has a summer shutdown, so it looks like they will be ready around mid-August or so...I will definately make a posting when they are ready!
