Help With Trackball Wiring please
« on: December 20, 2009, 12:21:27 am »
I would like to re-use the trackball that was on the Big Event Golf cabinet that i got. I just took it apart and gave it all a good clean,23 years of grime had seized it up,it wouldnt roll, but i cleaned it up nice, put a tiny bit of oil on the bearings and now the ball moves a lot more freely,so i figured it worth re-using next time a build a cab.
There are 8 wires on it and i wanted to find out where each wire would go and how I would hook it up to controls in the control panel. I took a huge photo so you can see it close up,click on the thumb below. I'm not sure of the manufacturer, there doesn't seem to be anything like that on it,just a note that tells you to check the bearings every so often
There is a red wire coming from each side and they are spliced together, not sure if they are meant to be or not. Left wire colors are red, black, yellow, green. Right side are red, black, lighter green and a brownish-purple one. I figured black to ground and red to power, probably 5v(?) If anyone knows where the other ones go that would be great.

Edit : Well I found out that I can do a mouse hack. Just have to determine power/ground connections and the x/y axes and then solder them into the mouse pcb. I wanted to just delete this post now that i had found more or less what i wanted to know,,but even though it tells you how to do it in the help section, there is no actual way to do it in reality as far as i can tell. If anyone know different let me know

If you haven't already seen this pdf on the optical encoder wiki page, it's worth a look.
