Author Topic: Smash TV Control Panel (Read 9445 times)

One of my favorite games in my early 20's was SmashTV. I want to be able to play it on the cabinet I am building.

I was wondering if anyone had pictures of a cabinet with duel player 1 & 2 joysticks. I don't really want a 4 player cabinet but I haven't found examples of the dual joystick setup. If not two joysticks, are people just using 4 buttons to emulate the 2nd joystick?

I was thinking about the 1Up design since it was compact (don't want a HUGH control panel).

Thanks for the links. I don't think my question was clear. I know what the original game looks like. I am interested in seeing if anyone has built a MAME control panel using duel joysticks. The original cabinets didn't have 6-7 buttons per person, a trackball, spinner, etc.

I wanted to see if anyone else managed to get all that "stuff" on one control panel and what the layout looked like. As I said, I am afraid it will be too cluttered so the 1UP rotating design may be the way to go.

Hehe, I don;t like big control panels. hence why mine is swappable. Though I plan on going modular in the future.

yeah, I've actually been considering with the help of 1up and rebirth abandoning my cp for a rotating cp.

haha, is my 59" wide panel big?

seriously. its 5 feet wide. looks like its gonna fly away.
BUT... 3 and 4 are removeable. with them off, its only 34" wide.
it does seem extreme, but i really hate the typical 4P cab angle, with the outside at like 45*. that is excessive and no fun to play IMO. im my design they are standing in practically the same place, but are much more square with the screen.
i dont have pics yet, only maya model shots. im waiting for both my happ stuff and laminate order to get here. the cab is built and ready, its just naked

You can check out my page to see my rotating panels (click Rebirth logo below). I too didn't want too much clutter, so decided on 3 seperate panels (which rotate). The one with 2 joysticks does have 6 buttons per joystick and a trackball, but isn't very cluttered (see below). That one is my "2 player" CP. I love Smash TV a lot too, love Robotron even more - so that 2 joystick panel gets a lot of work. Defender is my favorite game, so one CP is dedicated to that, you could have 1 just for Smash TV (though the 2 player dual joystick panel I think would be fine, the 2 joysticks are a bit off center the way I have it set up but really isn't too noticiable during play. I have been able to get over 350,000 on Robotron already!!) - Defender has a unique layout which is why I really wanted one CP built just like that, but if you plan on playing that much Smash you could have one built exactly like that one. 1UP also has another version of rotating panels, same deal - you can have one dedicated to a Smash TV setup.

Aceldamor-your panel doesn't seem to be out out of size with your monitor. I assume it is a 27" arcade monitor? I am looking at a 21" computer monitor for now so I think it might seem out of place on my cabinet.

night-59" panel??? No that isn't big....for a Buick

I want to try and stay away from removable panels. My boys are 2 & 3 and I don't want to give them any more to get into than I absolutely have to do.

Rebirth-I have actually already visited your site, as well as 1UP and Frostillicus. All very nicely done. I actually like the fact that it appears you can rotate your panel without having to open the front door. How do you like the rotating monitor? I couldn't tell if it was a 19" or a 21" computer monitor.

I am leaning toward the rotating panel since the size seems more in line with my monitor. I just wanted to see what other options might be out there. I think I have my answer. With a 21" monitor, rotating will look the best.

they are completely slide in/slide out. nothing to get into. although theyd still be heavy for a 3 year old

I love the rotating monitor. I have a 21" computer monitor in there. I got the idea of how to rotate from Russ' Mame Cab (I have a link to him on my site), I took his idean and modified it a bit. Spins very easily. I like being able to rotate it since you gain over 4 inches in screen height/width by rotating it (i mean, if you played a vertical game on the monitor not rotated, the picture would be more than 4 inches smaller that if you rotated the monitor to vertical and take up the whole screen).

As people point out, there is time to invest in planning and building it so it rotates, but the extra maybe 6 hours it took me to do this was well worth it in my opinion

Yeah, I'm using a 27" WG D9200 Arcade monitor...My cp is 34x18. A dupe of luSid's (MK2) plans with a modded cp box.

Rebirth:

I've been talking to 1Up about modding luSid's design for a rotating cp and we both agree that it would be easier to mod it to your rotating design...any chance we could colaberate(sp?) and see what can be done?

Yep my 3rd panel is a dual joystick setup for...dual joysticks. Anyway - the outside 2 are snk ls-30s and the inside are top-fire supers (Soon to be replaced by those grippy trigger sticks).
It works pretty well so far - and I don't anticipate much difference when I put the trigger grips on the inside two. Must..have...near authentic...assault...

Also are you wiring the top button so that it shares the first button or does it have it's own switch and key code?

It feels like 2 joysticks - Top fires feel just like supers. I guess that's because they are called Top-Fire Supers

They have a larger throw than the ls-30s, but that doesn't really bother me once I get into a game.

My joysticks are wired to my ipac4 like this,BTW: O=rotary, @=topfire

So for 2-player single-joystick games like ikari warriors the 2nd player uses the right ls-30. This works out because my best friend is left handed. If it's a 2-player non-rotary joystick game we can either use that or just switch to the other panel.

The top fire buttons are wired to player 1, switch1 and player2 switch1. No real reason for this, but having the left one wired to player1 switch1 means little or no setup for some games. I can always remap on the fly I suppose (ewwwww).

Dual Smash TV - My buddy and I just finished this game a couple of weeks ago.

I just have a standard 2 player control panel, but I also have a thrustmaster dual analog gamepad that I plug in for those rare times I get to play 2 player Smash TV.

It also works for getting 3 players on Gauntlet, The Simpsons and Ninja Turtles. I wonder if a 2 gamepad could also be used...
