How to run NES in MALA ?
« on: December 05, 2009, 08:20:55 pm »
Hello from Maine,

I'd like a crash course on how to run NES in MALA :)

I tried searching for it but I think my searching powers are extra low today :(

I almost have it working using my own noodle but I can't get NES to run full screen or exit a game or show snaps ...

Thanks!
Craig

Showing snaps: You'll need to point Mala at the directory you have the NES emulator set up to save snaps. And then there's naming convention worries.

Not sure what emulator you're using. I'm also in the process of setting this sort of thing up. I'm using NEStopia, and it can be set to run full screen on start, remapping ESC to exit, turn off confirm for exit, remap controls to MAME standards, etc.

Thanks Bob I'll try that :)

Personally I dislike the idea of running anything other than arcade games on an arcade machine, I'm a minimalist. But my pal wants NES on his cab so here I am ...

I can't imagine beating Zelda or Metroid standing up :dizzy:

Have fun!

Yeah, I wasn't going to put any console games on my system...using a joystick seemed too weird.

Then I remembered this thing:

NEStopia even has buttons to match the Advantage's turbo buttons.  ;D

Sweet controller :)

Hey OK I've got it mostly working  ;D

Alright, here's what I did :

I used FCE emulator and I set it to run in full screen. In Mala I enabled "hotkeys" to close FCE with the ESC button :

(Other emu config, Options, Use hotkeys, Edit hotkeys, add close, source esc)

But the snaps still don't work...

At first I tried Nestopia but it had a "video memory" error

with the snaps, make sure they are named exactly the same as the rom.
also make sure the layout your using has a snap box in it to display snaps

I had a hard time getting getting fceUltra to run in fullscreen.
My video card did not like any of it's preset settings.

Finally ended up getting it working correctly with the following options:

Mode: 1024 by 768 @ 32 bpp

Special Scaler:  hq3x

Stretch to fill screen

Also check off to allow more than 8 sprites per scanline.  That will get rid of the characters dissappearing or flickering when there are too many on the screen.
Not quite as authentic, but a better experience in my opinion.

(I liken it to restoring muscle cars.  They have to be as good as people remember, which is a lot better than they actually were.)
