Since I am a newb collector and I will be picking up my first machine soon, I realized I'm better off buying a hand truck. Would a 300lb max load hand-truck be enough? These machines don't weight more than that do they?

Depends on the type, but both of my cabinets are pretty damn heavy. I think a sit down cab may be heavier than that, but those are more likely to come apart (open style, not enclosed cockpit style). If you are just looking at a stand up cabinet, you should probably be ok with that weight rating IMO.

I'd go a little heavier capacity than that, just in case. And don't get one with inflated tires. They bounce too much when loaded up and make stairs WAY harder than it has to be.

Cabinet weights will vary, but I like to count on about 350lbs for a standard upright.

My last one was a standard P-handled truck and was rated for 600lbs max. It served me well until recently -- moving my Cheyenne downstairs resulted in a bent wheel frame (and Cheyenne is listed as 327lbs on ggdb.com).

I got it free and had it for about 10 years, so I'm not too broken up about it. The next one is going to be a proper appliance truck with straps. There is something to be said for the stability of an appliance cart.

Oh, I just thought of something else. In addition to the tires/solid casters point, you might look to see if you can get one that's a bit wider. When you are on ground that's not level with a tall heavy cabinet, a narrow hand truck will make it harder to keep things stable. I would never move my cabinets without help, but I would probably want at least 2 spotters if I used a narrow hand truck again!

I ended up getting this http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200381546_200381546 a "made in china" copy of a more expensive one- It does weigh more than a regular one, more solid, and it is higher, great for leverage. I'm very happy with it.

ps I have those forearm lifts posted above, good for mattress not good for cabs....

I loved the way they discussed it at length...and still dropped it... haha may camera man should have helped them.

On a related note, have any of you ever used the forearm forklifts?

I would suggest an appliance dolly over the hand truck. Works great since these things are basically the same size as a fridge.

I would agree with this (hence my preference for my next purchase) ... I have used appliance dollies to load cabinets at auctions and they are WAY nicer to work with than hand carts.

Straps help also ... if I had a dollar for every time that a cab threatened to bounce off of a hand cart while going downstairs, particularly with inflated tires (they are a bad thing on stairs, but nice on grass or gravel) ... well, I could buy a case of beer or two.

LOL. Forgot I posted this.

How stupid of me. Well I ended up going with a $60 300lb capacity hand truck with inflated wheels from Home Cheap-o and it works quite nicely. Got a Punch-Out!, Frogger, and Double Dragon in the house no problem. I'm lucky to go through the garage and have the game room downstairs, so there is no real obstacles involved. I will store this information in my brain in case I ever do need to take a cab or anything as big down a flight of stairs. Thanks guys, and sorry I fell asleep on this one.

Hand truck. Dolly.

They are words widely used to describe the exact same thing.

The key though is... You need one with straps, and with solid (non-inflatable) wheels.

In other words, NOT the one pictured above.

THe style with a strap and stair runners is great. THey tend to be heavy in themselves (adding a good 40 lbs to your load) but lowering down stairs is a cinch, and the straps is 100% a must for safety.

The one pictured above is a dead ringer for the one that I have used (I had it prior to entering the hobby), up until its recent demise and is what I would avoid.

I dunno, I thought that the difference between an appliance dolly/truck was apparent (e.g. solid wheels and straps), but there's a pedant in every group.

I have that red one only mine is grey. It sucks. The wheels don't hold air for more than a couple of days. The axle bent a little under the weight of Atari cabs. The wheels bounce like crazy on grass - I actually dumped a Star Wars onto its side because of that. Thankfully that cab is trash anyway - the monitor didn't get hurt.

You don't have to have one with straps built in but you definitely should have straps to attach. They really do make a huge difference to safety.
