Other than a juke - what could I make out of a touchscreen?
« on: November 22, 2009, 10:08:31 am »
I'm very chuffed with the touchscreen jukebox I made. I use it almost everyday but at the moment, I haven't got any projects in the pipeline and I have to say, I miss building/tinkering...

I was thinking about building something with a 5" PSOne screen, a 5.6" touchscreen panel, a composite to VGA cable and a PC... however, other than building another juke (with a smaller screen) I cannot think of anything nifty to make... any suggestions? Also, don't want to make it a touchscreen games console as the screen will be a little too smaller for that!

Seriously though, have you finished tinkering with your army of candies?

You could put a colour chart on one and use it to control mood lighting! A small screen would be perfect for that!

The electronics is for basic to medium "tinkerers"! You can buy the RGB strips or try build yourself (much better satisfaction)

I'm planning on doing this after i finish my cab and make a jukebox! A guy has a program written with the colour chart etc all done so shouldn't be that hard!

Haha, yep, they are pretty much done - just need to replace a screen in one and that's about it.

I quite like that idea Nacimroc, it had crossed my mind before but didn't really know where to start... I'll take a look at it as an option! :)

Just had a thought... is it possible to make a duel screen media centre set up...

The small 5" touchscreen could be the interface by which you select your media... then you link the TV up to play the actual media/film. All the controls are on the touchscreen and the TV is used for the playback...

Is there any programs out there that allow for this?

I've been kinda throwing around the idea of a "kitchen pc" or somesuch.

not for recipes and that kinda crap (although, that could be useful at times I suppose), but for stuff that I'd like to check on right quick but don't want to trundle upstairs to the office for. Liking checking google maps for a location, looking up a store address, playing some music in the kitchen (ok, well that's a juke of sorts), quick checking email (or byoac posts  :) )

That sort of stuff. Touch screen would be cool for that, maybe a flip down screen mounted under the cabinets.

But a full size sit down driving cab is starting to push it's way to the top of my "next project" list now....

Well, you can get fairly cheapy touchscreen panels that work very well. Hence why I'm looking for an excuse to get another touch panel kit!

I say go for it! ;)

Quite a nice idea... but a bit pointless for me at the moment. Just picked up a dirt cheap dual graphics card off ebay. Will check the bank account tomorrow and consider getting the other bits and pieces... I think the nice thing about this project is, whatever happens, I'll be able to make something pretty nifty... and it won't cost me a fortune (probably max £50 all in, I reckon!) :)

Right... got nearly all the bits I need... decided I'm going for another project in addition with this one as well... utilising another PSOne screen... in the process of getting hold of another!

5.6" USB touch screen panel ordered
5" PSOne Screen ordered (in process of getting a second for the other project)
Composite to VGA ordered
Already got Ipod Video to composite cable (x2 - one for this project and one for other 'potential' project!)
Already got multiple spare PCs (needed for one of the projects)

Now I just need to figure out exactly what I want to achieve with this! Also, need to ask a CNC machinist I know whether or not he'd be happy to do a couple of small bits for me (for when I start casing the things up!)

Where did you order the 5.6" touchscreen from? Just curious.

It was only a panel kit...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290321496189&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

It will be installed over a 5" PSOne TFT.

After purchasing my 15" touchscreen panel kit from these guys I was pretty impressed hence why they get my service again - it only took a week to arrive and was the cheapest option available as well. :)

No worries chap! :)

Just out of interest what are you intending to build with one? :)

I'm not sure if they will work with the lcd's I have. They are 4.5" lcd screens from a car dvd player. I was thinking of building a mini with one and possibly using the other in a jukebox I'm going to build in an antique stand up radio. It look similar to the one in this thread.

How do you attach these to the screen so they don't look like an aftermarket screen cover?  Is there somekind of adhesive that you use to keep them flush to the display?  I've seen these before (not at such a reasonable price though), but keep thinking about the installation.  The POS style ones are much nicer looking IMHO, but they are WAY more expensive.

I used some "Fastcap" Speedtape which is pretty much a strong double sided tape. Works great!

As with small touchscreen, I'd mount it in the car as a carPC  :applaud:

So you just attach the edge of the screen, or is that tape transparent?

It's not exceptionally tricky to figure out ways to attach them. On my 15" I had to sand down part of the casing of the LCD monitor I applied to so that it would fit it. Just taped it around the edge of the monitor and the casing was so tight it has never moved or slipped out of place.

By the way... Encryptor - I really don't see why they would work - it's all about what system you're using it - it's USB and acts as a standard mouse so it shouldn't really matter what screen you're applying it to...

I'm attaching mine to a PSOne TFT after all... ;)

Yeah I know you're using a PS1 screen but they are square. The lcd's I am using are only 4.6" screens for one thing and they are 16:9 wide screen format so they aren't square. It might be possible but I don't think so.
