thoughts on these touch-screens...?
« on: November 18, 2009, 03:52:27 pm »
This is Day 1 in my research for options for an in-wall juke for my gameroom, but I saw these on ebay and wanted to get opinions on these touchscreens as they seem to be a good deal...Elo 1547L for $53 shipped. I didn't want to jump at something and then find out that I should have gone another route.  Thanks

Here's a thread from another forum where a guy bought one of those.  He seems quite happy with it, and is even thinking of buying some more.

Freakin' cheap! I'd buy all of em if I had the coin. Just picked up one for now.

Best part, this is one with a USB mouse interface. Most of the ones I've found that were decent deals were the older serial interfaces.

Here's hoping they work decently.

The seller has pretty good feedback though.

One is coming my way.  Donno what I'll make yet though...

It's amazing that you whip out an iphone, and no one seems to think twice about the touch screen.  You pull out a jukebox, and the touch screen is the coolest thing ever.   :dunno

I bought one for my juke as my ELO touchscreen died last week after my buddy's bum son-in-law dripped chaw spit all over the screen and them tried to wipe it clean, then the chaw spit shorted out the screen!

Well I went ahead and bought one as well...so I guess this project is officially underway. It's going to be pretty sweet with all 15 of my CD's loaded into this jukebox.    :-\

I have this screen.  It's great.  And SCROLLING works, unlike on my kiosk that has a regular LCD screen with a touch screen overlay.

I had to get another one.  I paid $90 for mine when I bought it.  THIS IS AN AMAZING DEAL!!!

Yeah when I bought both of my ELO's I paid easily 100 each locally.

You'll have to pickup a power brick unless it has the thick power cable that plugs into the back like a standard power cable.

Looking at the description  "This unit has a self contained power supply. "

Looking at the pictures posted in the auction, the third pic, the beige cord on the left looks like a normal PC power cord.  I dont think a power brick is gonna be needed.  For ~$50, these are a hell of a deal.

That is a good deal, I got one that's very similar (only difference is mine has a bezel) for $50.00 and I couldn't be happier with it. Mine was manufactured in 2001 I think, and the only knock I have with it is that the off angle viewing on it is pretty bad. This isn't uncommon however for LCD's of that era, and for $50.00, what's to complain about. It's pretty accurate as well, and easy to calibrate. No you don't need for a power brick or anything, just a standard power cord. All I needed to get mine running was a standard USB cable, power cord, VGA cable and of course downloading the drivers.  http://www.elotouch.com/SUPPORT/Downloads/dnld.asp. It looks like a great deal to me.

Anyone know anywhere on the opposite side of the pond to get these ? He won't ship to Ireland and I'd love one without spending a fortune! If anyone is feeling kind or wants to make a few quid to ship me one please let me know!

You could keep checking The U.S, Canada listings on Ebay. It's not that uncommon for these things to turn up here in this price range, perhaps you will find a seller willing to ship to Ireland.

I got mine in today, everything works.  It's got a nice black bezel on it that I might be able to use.

there was an extra circuit board mounted on the back and some wires coming out if it, anyone know what these things might be?  This one also has buttons on the other side to control the built in adjustment functions.

Edit: I also asked the seller... its for sound.
The circuit board is for sound and can be removed actually. The 2 wires were for a small external speaker.

The black bezel is what holds the touchscreen. The touchscreen isnt held on by 2-sided adhesive strips as others have been that I had purchsed.

That sounds like the exact same one I have. The bezel is really nice, as you only have to drill a few holes to mount the touchscreen. I didn't have to do any routing to make room for wires, like others have had to do.

So THAT'S what that circuit board is for.

When I got mine one of the caps had been bent and the wire snapped.

I desoldered, and resoldered, powered up any everything worked fine, but I never was really sure what that external board was actually for.

Good to know!

Do I need a USB cable to even get a display?

I hooked up a VGA cable and the power cable and I get a "No Video Input. Please Check Cable" message.  I thought the USB cable would just be for the touch-screen aspect of it but thought I would ask.  Thanks

I did install the drivers...or at least they appeared to install....

Yes, the USB cable is strictly for the touchscreen. Should be able to run the monitor without it.
Windows should have picked up that monitor without any drivers. (assuming you are running Windows)
Did you do a complete shutdown after plugging that monitor in ?
Make sure the monitor power stays on during the reboot process.

So i got my touchscreen, took it to work to play with and had it running perfectly under XP.

My jukebox however, is windows 2000.  After plugging it into my win2000 machine at home for the juke, it wouldn't boot properly.  It got to the loading windows 2000 screen and as soon as the crawl bar was finished moving to the right at the bottom of the screen it would restart from the post screen.  Endless loop.

I plugged in the old normal LCD monitor, booted to windows, worked fine.  I plugged the touchscreen in after windows had started, and it worked.  I installed the drivers (hard to find the 2000 drivers) and it was working!  Touch worked fine.  Then out of nowhere, system crashed back to post, and in the endless loop again.

ARRRRGH.

My jukebox is not a powerful enough machine to run XP.  Its got a very early p4 and only 256 MB of RAM.

Freebox/E-touch will run on a P3 so you should not have issues with that.
