Since you mentioned fighters these are probably the best any Japenese sticks Sanwa's http://www.lizardlick.com/pages/joysticks.shtml
but be careful what you choose because if yo u play a large varitey of games these sanwas might not suit your needs. What else do you like to play

If you want Street Fighter to feel just like it did when you were a kid in the arcades in the 90's get the iL Competition sticks.  They look and feel much better and are essentially HAPP if you know your history.  HAPP split up in two, Suzo-Happ and iL.  Suzo-Happ opened up shop in China and "cheaped" out on production meanwhile iL believe is based out of Spain and when you have these two sticks side by side it is almost night and day.  The iL is just better and seems to make more consistent contact on the diagonals compared to the HAPP.  However, between a HAPP Competition or Sanwa/Seimitsu I would pick HAPP anyday.  I get really annoyed at the constant clicking on my Madcatz SE stick and the stick feels like it is designed for a 5 year old or someone with very small hands.

If you are looking for iL, check the Classified and look for someone named Ponyboy.  Haven't ordered from him before but read nothing but good things.

Many prefer the seimitsu ls-32 over a sanwa stick if they are into shmups - its a pretty well rounded stick and great for both. Cheaper too dependin on where you look!

Dude, that was, like, the most coherent and type-correct post I've seen you make. Excellent. (I wasn't looking to bust your balls. It just really got my attention.)

cc: look up the suzo inductive stick. You might like.

It depends on the type of "feel" you want. If you like the long "throw" (the distance between rest/neutral to the switch activation) of the old western-style SF2 cabinets, go with IL Competition sticks. If you like the quicker, shorter throw of the Japanese style sticks, go with either Sanwa or Seimitsu.  I personally like the quicker style sticks, especially for games that require dashing/parrying (ala tapping the stick) like SF3 does. I also find them quicker to maneuver and react throughout SHMUPS.

I am quite aware the OP has HAPP Competitions and just FYI iL Competitions are not the same.  They might look like they are the same but you would have to see and play the two of them side by side to feel the differences.  The person also mentioned he is having a hard time doing quarter and half circles (see in bold).  Now recommending him to go with Sanwa or Seimitsu might be an option but this might be a problem if the person is looking for an easy swap replacement which the iL will fit in the place of the HAPP easily where as the japanese parts do not and would require some pretty big mods to fit correctly.

been playing alot of street fighter 3 lately and finding it a little hard to do quarter&half circles with happ competition joysticks so what type do most of you use?

The actuator is smaller and not as tight on the shaft making for a smoother circular motion on the iL stick where as the HAPP the actuator is larger which is better for activating the cherry switches but the actuator not rotating on the shaft makes for a stiffer not as smooth circular motion.  Also another difference between the HAPP and iL is that the articulator in the iL is made of high quality white plastic, while the HAPP is made of a cheaper black plastic.

HAPP Competition

iL Competition

I found this out because a good friend of mine recently restored a SF2 dynamo arcade cabinet and had to order a replacement stick for P1 and got a HAPP Competition and the P2 was original which turned out to be iL.  The difference is quite noticable if you are use to pulling off moves and combos consistently.

So, you could just use a Dremel or a drill to enlarge the hole of the actuator ?

I have a metal on top of wood cp http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=97349.msg1026865#msg1026865
it looks like the Sanwa  JLF-TP-8T Ball Handle Joystick, 4 & 8-Way Adjustable might fit the spot for the happ stick is just right.
Need new buttons also have the Happ Ultimate Pushbuttons and they suck, they keep jamming so have to take them apart so its a smooth push.

Wow, nice score for $40!  Poor machine must have been in a very smoky environment or sitting next to the window in the sun all day long.  After seeing your machine I think you should still keep it american and put iL and replace all the buttons with standard or ultimate iL buttons.  I don't know what it is about HAPP but I've never had any problems with my iL sticks or buttons.
