Powering RGB Leds for 4 Player CP
« on: November 12, 2009, 10:31:57 pm »
I'm about to begin constructing a 4 player CP that will have 36 RGB drive Leds from GGG and 4 u360's.  My understanding is that it is best to use the PC power supply to power the led's and Ledwiz's.

Can someone help me determine if my PSU is large enough to handle my Control Panel and PC?

My PC
e8400 OC'd to 3.6ghz
Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R
Corsair 550w, CMPSU-550VX, +3.3V@30A,+5V@20A,+12V@41A,-12V@0.8A,+5VSB@3A
2 x 1GB Gskill DDR2 800
EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3, 256-P2-N761-AR
2 ea 640gb WD Hd's
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Heatsink

The electric side of this is a little foreign to me.  Well, this is my first Cabinet and OC attempt, so most of this is foreign to me.

Thanks!

You will be fine. Even if you have all of the LEDs on full intensity you would only draw around 1.4A.

Yes, you will want to use the +5v from a spare molex etc to supply extra power the LED Wiz'z.

It looks like you will probably need a USB hub as you have eight devices listed there alone. If so, get a powered hub.

Great!  I planned on using a powered USB hub for all my u360's.

But let me ask you this....Randy said it was important for the Ledwiz's and the Led's to "make sure that the power supply you select, and the PC power supply, share continuity at GROUND."

Everything in my cabinet will run to a Smartstrip for power.  Based off Randy's remarks, will it matter if i'm using the +5v from my PSU to power the Led's and having the Ledwiz's getting their power from a powered USB hub?

or should, i run the Ledwiz's directly to my PC and bypass the powered usb hub?
