EDIT:

Thanks to everyone who helped, but I no longer need the adapter as I went out and bought a 36" Sony Trinitron ($75 on craigslist) and decased it to put into my showcase cab.  I figured it is easier to output to s-video from my computer than it was going to be to convert the Guncon signal to VGA.  Thanks again.

Hi all,

I recently bought a pair of Guncon2 controllers and every Playstation 2 Guncon game.  They work great with a standard TV and composite hookup.  However, I would like to use the Playstation 2 and Gun games with my cabinet which has a 36" VGA monitor in it. (Decased Gateway Destination)

Does anyone know if there is an adapter that would take the signal from my Playstation 2 and the Guncon2 controllers and convert it to VGA and allow the guns to work?

I have searched and everything I have found has been to have the signal coming from a computer not a Playstation 2.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

I also bought the s-video guncon2 adapter cable, so a device that translates s-video to VGA would work too.  I have found several devices that do this, but I am unsure whether the signal from the guns will be lost in the translation, that is why I am asking here for help or advice, as I would hate to buy one of the VGA adapter boxes and it not work.

Thanks

Jeff Green

I have one of these guncon pistols and a magic vga adapter.  I'll try and get it to work with the PS1 and Time Crisis.  Not sure if it will recognize it, but better than buying the vga converter and then you find out otherwise.  Off the bat I would say EMS TopGun as an alternative, but I don't know if it works with PS2s.

If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

I have a set of TopGuns.  I was just hoping to use the PS2 with my showcase cabinet.  If all else fails I will convert a shooting cab to use my PS2 and a 27 inch TV.

Thanks for the help.

Oh well I hooked it up and the gun did not recognize squat.  I have a Magic Vga and a Kworld Component VGA box I use with the Xbox,PSX,DC.

I was going to try Epsxe but judging on the workarounds I'll have to pass.

At least I have the gun for the Aimtrak.  :applaud:

Sorry its bad news.  ;

I thought that maybe the standard adapter boxes would lose the signal.

Does anyone know how to create a circuit to take the composite or s-video sync and put it onto the VGA signal?  I am willing to pay for a working solution to this problem if anyone is interested.  I know that there is a circuit that is available for taking the VGA signal from a computer for the Guncon2 so I am hoping that it can be done in reverse.

Thanks again for the help.  And thanks to ark_ader for trying that for me. :-)

Such a circuit isn't particularly simple as it involves a scaler or deinterlacer.  Products are available, though.  arcademvs.com sells a RGB or YPbPr 480i component to 480p VGA scaler for like $50.  The PS2 can output YPbPr component or RGB component at 480i.  You'll need either a set of RCA component cables or a hacked up SCART cable.

A component cable to VGA solution will not work here as the guncon2 is a composite or s-video solution only.  Thanks for the thought though.

The luma ('Y') channel of component video should work for the guncon.  It's basically the black&white portion of composite video.  Just use an RCA splitter to hook it up to the compsite video input.

If you use a hacked up SCART cable for RGB output, full blown composite video is also available.  Orange, Green, and Blue are RGB video, and the yellow wire is composite video.  Be sure to change the component output colorspace from YPbPr to RGB in the shell options if you want to do this.

From what I have read you can plug the guncon2 video cable into the green component cable and it will work.  So, not sure if that makes the conversion to VGA any easier, but it does open up another option.

Problem solved, I picked up a 36" Sony Trinitron TV tonight for $75.  I will decase it and swap it into my showcase cab.  I figure it is easier to output the computer to s-video than to convert composite to VGA.  And, the Trinitron has a fantastic picture.

Thanks again to all those that tried to help me on this.
