Look for a furniture store near you with an 'Outlet Center' most regions have a HOM, and they're always in back by the warehouse. I've gotten quite a few pieces of very nice furniture, all of which are either returns or have some small piece of damage. I.E. $80 for a $350 table that had a small scratch in the pedestal column, up where you can't see it without getting under the table.

SWEET!  I'm building one of the gas powered ones!  WOOHOO!  Now I'll be able to get from the cocktail table to the standup in about .01 seconds!  (the exhost might be a little much)!

Real reply.

I had a friend who built furnature.  He went to school for a long time (ok 2 years).  But making furnature isn't the easiest.  If the fittings aren't 100%, they creak and move and break.

So if you are going to try, I would start with a VERY simple design.  Fun!  but dont' expect to really save money (if you assume time is money).

Yard sales are the way to go.  I had 4 I got for a buck each with padding.  You can always find some for 10 bucks each without looking hard.

Also, Sams had some small ones (for cocktail type tables) for 20 or 30 bucks.  I almost got some, but put it off.  These looked nice and had leatherish padding.

I've been looking for some that swivel and have a back to them.  The only ones I've found are at least $100 each.  There is a bar supply store right by my house (greatest store ever, they have everything a drinking man could ever dream of owning - I always feel like grunting like Tim Allen in Home Improvement when I walk around in there :D ).  They have these all brushed stainless steel bar stools, with a thin back and swivel, and the seat part of it has the butt-groove contours built in...... ohhhh baby!!!  Problem is, they are $140 each (on sale!).  I can't see spending that on a stool, but those are sweet.

:) Rotate or die! :)

mill stores or "unifinished furniture" stores could have the non=cushion ones cheap...

exampel store millstores in new england

Granted Snaaaack lives in NYC, so he'll need to find a closer, more comprable place (unless he wants to spend the savings on gas/toll money)

I got some nice pine bar stools at Target (of all places!) for about $30 each. They even had pads you could add for another $10.

They're not as good as a "real" arcade stool, but they do the trick...

Just to mention....

I just found 2 stools perfect for the arcade machine for 2 bucks each a block from my house today.  When I moved, I didn't bring my old ones... (sold them for 5 bucks each at a garage sale... but they where old and kinda nasty).

Anyway... look around next weekend.  You will probably find some.

I would recommend just buying one...it's trickier to build stuff you sit on (supporting weight) and not have them break, then to build a coffee table.

I'd want steel/metal ones anyways to go with my cab- and I'd have to buy those.

If you're willing to buy bar stools without actually getting your hands on them first.  Try Ebay.  I just did a quick search for "bar stool" and came up with 10 pages of stuff.  Some look pretty decent and relativly cheap too.
I just saw an auction for 2 chrome padded swivel stools with seat backs for $45 at

I saw this neat black fold up type bar stool at Walmart today for $9.95.
I unfolded it & tried it out in the store.
It was pretty sturdy & it had a decent pad built right in.
Best thing is the price but its pretty neat that you could fold it up & hide it behind your cab when you aren't using it.
My wife got embarassed when I sat on it, reached out my hands & started making video game noises in the isle.
Did I go a bit to far?
 ;)

In my experience I've found that when it comes to any kind of functional furniture, you get what you pay for.  The cheap stools/chairs at discount stores might seem okay for a few days or weeks, but after some steady usage they almost always start creaking, then loosening up, then inevitably become so wobbly you fear for your life.  And I'm about a typical male weight (195 lbs), so it's not like I'm crushing the thing  ;)  I've gone through 2 of the cheaper types.

I say spend some good money now, and get some solid, welded metal stools with leather cushions that won't put your behind to sleep.

How to build your own stool (cheaply):

Go to lowes or home depot and get a 8 to 14 inch pre cut wood circle.  (Wood or pb or mdf, whatever)

Now go to the pre-carved wood section.  There should be table legs, lazy susan brackets (for swivel chairs), feet and anything else you might need.  They might even have banister spokes, which are great as they have a dowel shaped butt on the end of them.

If they have it, get a sheet of foam padding.  It doesn't really matter how thick it is as you can always double up.

Ok get stain or paint while your there and next head over to your local fabric or furniture store.  Pick up some cheap vinyl, you'll only need about a yard tops.

Take yoru precut circle and set it on your foam tracing the outline. Make as many circles as you want until you have enough padding.  Keep in mind that you'll compress it slightly.

Drill any holes for spokes or mount your lazy susan to your circle, and then place the foam on what will be the top of your seat.    Now staple your vinyl over the foam and onto the bottom of your circle. Trim as you go, place well, and use a LOT of staples.

You should be done.  If you wish to stain the legs do so.

That's a simplified version of the process obviously, but my point is building a stool is nothing compared to building a cabinet.  So I say go for it!

<snip>

That's a simplified version of the process obviously, but my point is building a stool is nothing compared to building a cabinet.  So I say go for it!

I think it's a bit more complicated than that -- don't forget some cross bracing between the legs for stability (drilling straight into a rounded leg is a pain, btw), and making sure that all the holes are the exact same depth so that the stool doesn't wobble. Hopefully it won't creak, either...

I don't think building a stool is as easy as it looks - have you actually built one?

I'm with Frostillicus: invest in a good stool (with the exception of some $600 bar stools I saw at a local "Lighthouse Pools" store, most are very reasonably priced.)

Sounds pretty ghetto!

The way I see it, if you have to MAKE your own furniture out of pre-built stuff at the lumberyard....something is very wrong in your life ;)

I can understand making a table out of 200 leftover bricks...or making a TV stand out of a couple dozen cinderblocks.  But making a stool?

better to get a cheapie prebuilt one off ebay or from walmart/target, and just refinish it.

HC's method sounds simple enough, but still alot of work for...a freakin stool.

Plus I'm not really down with those "cheap room remodel" type things.  Where they re-do each others rooms? (Trading spaces?) and they basically wind up with a room that looks like its filled with a whole bunch of really cheap garbage?  "We took your old headboard, covered it in foam and vinyl, and added decorative rhinestones to it! Does't it look GREAT?".

"No, it looks like about 12 dollars worth of cheap automotive grade vinyl and $3.00 worth of press-on tacks, are you people retarded? Take that sh*t off right @($*$* now!" :)

Zeitgeist,

Very nice (embarassing your wife like that...).
My wife hates it when I do anyhting that's not "Normal" in public.

Anyhow, those fold up stools are great for about a month's worth of use...
I've had 2 of them that I used just for occational seating & now they wobble and one of them has already broken. The welds and metal at the top of the legs don't take too kindly to much motion. If I had these things in front of a cabinet, they wouldn't have lasted a week. YMMV...

That's certainly beats the $150/stool I spent at Billy Bobs for some retro looking swivel bar stools with padded backs. Of course they are a lot nicer looking... but I've yet to get $300 worth of use out them. "You get what you pay for" Well obviously... be nice to get what you pay for, for a lot less.

I have two.  the 14.95 ones.  Very strong.  Quick assembly.  Inexpensive.

Hope this helps,

That's a high-chair, not a stool.  I'd be embarrassed to set in that thing.

And I guess I'll have to explain how to make a stool in more detail as some of you just don't get it.

To make "easy" legs...

Buy two pieces of pre-sanded 1.5 by 1.5 s

Cut into 4 pieces of desired length.  (Your stool will sit slightly lower)

Take a carriage bolt and drill through the center of each plank.  Now take two and bolt them together in a "x".   You'll need to find brackets to hold them to the bottom of the stool but that's the hardest part.  Poof you've just made a folding stool with 20 bucks worth of lumber.  See when you close the "x"s you close the stool.  A monkey could make one of these.  And if you don't like cheap automotie vinyl then get some leather.  It's your choice, but snaaake wanted to know how to do it cheaply.  Maybe you should keep that in mind.

i love my bombo chair, not cheap, but comfortable and the retro futuristic look really goes well with the galaxian side-art:

I found a nice folding stool at IKEA for $25. It's nice looking an very sturdy to boot. ;)
