Name this game- 194ron ? Tr-42 ?? Argghh !!!!
« on: November 06, 2009, 01:01:29 am »
Ok I got this cabinet that is a horrible, horrible, conversion, to the TRON guys anyway :) The midway part of the power supply is now missing, spinner is gone, and the harness has been re soldered on the jamma end to fit the 1942 board. Paint looks to be dumped over the original artwork and the ROMSTAR sticker applied over the runny black paint. It came with some Tron PCB's ( I'm doubtful about them working) the monitor w/ 1942 burn is there, wiring intact,  flight stick looks to be in very good shape, minus the "fire" sticker, and the wood is in what I can only say excellent shape.

OK 1,000,000 question - What in the heck do I do with it ?

 Mame it ?
 Strip it ?
Anyone need a Tron cabinet to swap parts into ?

I also grabbed a Pole Position that seems to be all there, Minus the PCB and monitor , I do have a PPII board that came with it, with typical edge connector burn. The wood looks excellent again, artwork 97% intact (don't mind the dirt)- Looks like it just came out of an arcade and is a few years old. I really hate to see this one wasted. I think it's make a great pp/ppII cab but my skill , time and funds are lacking to repair the power supply, PCB board, and controls on a 28 year old coin-op.  At worst I suppose a 360 mame cab , but I don't know if I can or should.
input?

Both those cabs would be great restoration projects. If I were you, I'd restore the Tron and sell the Pole Position help pay for it.
If the wood is good as you say, that's a great start. The coin door is easily restore-able. The bezel looks good, the monitor burn doesn't look bad. Get a spinner to accompany your good-condition original tron stick...

Do the right thing. Help Flinn....end of line.

I'd do a non-destructive MAME on the Pole Position if it were me.  You can use the current controls and such that are in there to make a nice driving cab.  If you change your mind, you can always take the MAME stuff out later and put a PCB back in.

Restore the Tron.
This power board should work, and it comes with a wiring harness if yours is hacked.  It's for a Tapper, but I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as Tron.

Tron spinner:

Tron repro art by Phoenix Arcade; it's pricy but it's the best quality you can get and they have every single piece of art.

There's even a translite repro by them, but right now quantities are limited as they just did their first run:

I have almost all the coin door part available if you need any.

Another argument for not maming those two:
Space. With mame cabinets I'm assuming you'd want to have it run with multiple players in mind. A Tron cabinet doesn't have the amount of space you need to have two people standing side-by-side to play games. Take it from me, I mame'd my Galaxian-clone with two players in mind, and it's just too cramped for two grown men to comfortably play. When I play beside my wife though, it's fine, she's tiny. But if this cabinet is going to be a single player mame, then my point is moot.

For mame cabinets I'd go with a dynamo (z or non-z shaped) cabinet, or those midway 4-player styled cabs, as there's a bit more area space at the CP for two people to stand comfortably next to each other. Beside, nobody cares if you mame those up ;)

Restore the Tron!!!!  ;D

I would love to restore the Tron , not just because I loved the game also because the cabinet wood is good, save for the paint. It looks like it would be a good cab to restore, but I think it's going to be out of my current price range and availible time. With the monitor mounting , cab space and retro factor I didn't really intend on Mameing it, but a restoration for me isn't likley now. Even storing for future fun ;D would be a problem at this point. I'm thinking someone with more parts for it / complete but rotten cab might  be better suited for it.

Anybody in the SE Wisconsin interested in a trade or ??

I'd do a non-destructive MAME on the Pole Position if it were me.  You can use the current controls and such that are in there to make a nice driving cab.  If you change your mind, you can always take the MAME stuff out later and put a PCB back in.
That sounds like the best idea atf this point. A multi mame 360. Don't cut anything, keep it whole for an easy restoration. I think I'll hack  a wheel and pedal to a sidewinder or opti-pac, since it came with 3 good control panels.

I was able to keep all the controls on my Championship Sprint stock.  I built a small board to take the standard CP wiring as input and send it to my mouse and Dual Strike hacks.  You might want to look into the nano U-HID for that cab since I think it can handle both the analog pedal and the optical wheel in a single, easy to install and use device.  It's probably cheaper than the stick and many mice that died in the making of my cab.
