recommend a new game
« on: November 02, 2009, 09:16:02 am »
hey all,

It seems that these days I am getting bored of the arcade machine. I spend more time dusting it off than playing it. Perhaps, there is something that I am missing. This where you come in.

I play mostly the classics and a few that I see recommended here and there on these forums, especially the competition games (although I am not very good at them, therefore will never post my scores), but I'm at a loss of what to play next. I need something that will hold my A.D.D. in check.

Any thoughts?

Avalanche - definitely addicting and very simple. This is the game that Activision's Kaboom copied...

is a spinner needed?

Kaboom was definitely an addictive game although the later levels were fairly rough for my young hands on the atari paddle.

You could use a mouse, but I think that would make the game harder. Definitely use a spinner for maximum enjoyment!

Here's a fun game with a mouse\keyboard\gamepad that I am totally addicted to now. So much so that not only did I buy it, I bought the sequel!

Platypus:
http://www.games2download.com/free-action-games/platypus.htm

Platypus II:
http://www.retro64.com/platypus_ii_game.asp

At $10 each, they're hard to pass up. Not the best in cab friendly config however; you can only choose mouse, keyboard or gamepad for each player, and each player must be different (i.e. can't use keyboard for both), plus no ability to config the keys. However, just whip out a mouse and you're good (that's the best choice as you can control the speed at which the ship moves left-right when using the mouse).

Nice thing is you can download a fully playable version that gives you 60 minutes of gameplay to decide if the game is worth buying.

Don't show that game to any women in your life... you'll never get another a chance to play your cab! The "kawai-i" content is way too high! ;D Good game, though.

Also see Libble Rabble.  Played that one on a random select one day and ended up playing it for an hour.  Kinda like Qix, except you control 2 stylii at the same time.  (Didn't hurt that I have a dual-joy setup already...)

4 suggestions:

Check out Twinkle Star Sprites, it's a shooter and a versus puzzler all in one. Pretty cool game, especially when playing head to head.

also, for a laugh, load up Ninja Baseball Batman

It's a beat-em-up game with a baseball theme, done japanese style. Very awesome artwork, and a pretty engaging brawler if you like those games.  It's just so ridiculously weird, i love it!

If you want something a little less art-crazy, and remarkable awesome, see if you can get your hands on Spy vs. Spy for the NES. Sorry it's not a mame game, though there might be a playchoice version in there, but I thought it's worth mentioning. It's a really deep game for it's time. I play it on my arcade cabinet sometimes...

Something more retro you ask? Try out Star Castle, it's like asteroids but different.

ninja baseball batman looks fun just for the wacky theme that is used. I used to play star castle when I was young all the time. I still play it from time to time now.

I am going to check out platypus when I get home tonight.

Need to make a list of new games to try so I don't forget. Sometimes I see someone talk about a game and I forget what it is or what thread I saw it in. I'm getting old without being old.  :banghead:

If you like Metal Slug, try Biomechanical Toy. Its a fun game with great graphics.  Another game I have been playing a lot is Stone Ball.

It's very Japanese and has an odd sense of humour.

Not to mention a few scenes that made me shut of the cab right quick like when I was playing with my 5 yo.

Gotta watchout with Pulirula...

There isn't anything really bad in it. Other than this pic (which is censored in the world version), I can't think of much...

played some Pu-Li-Ru-La and ninja baseball ninja batman last night. Ended up adding them to the favorites. I also found Rygar as I was scrolling through the games. I used to play it on nes all the time. Forgot about the arcade version. I think I stayed up later than I should have last night but it was good to get the machine going again.

That's great to hear emerica! Glad you enjoyed Ninja Baseball Batman, it's definitely one I like to show to my buddies when they're over.

Here's a couple more suggestions as well:
A classic sega game, Wonder Boy. I used to play this one a lot, and still enjoy it today. There are quite a few sequels to this game as well, but the original has always been my favourite. The current mame romset should have it.

Wizards and Warriors

It's an NES game, but it pretty good to play with an arcade joystick setup.

I used to play Wonder Boy on the master system as a kid. It reminds me of Kid Niki for nes which wasted a lot of my youth.
