Button Layouts on 4-player cab
« on: October 31, 2009, 01:18:44 pm »
So as I am almost up for ordering the button parts that I need, I am concerned with the multiple layout options available for the 4-player mame machines.

I only really plan on loading up X-Men 4-player, Simpsons 4-player and maybe some other games, but is it just the normal method of putting 6 buttons "just in case" on the 3 and 4 player controls? Most games I see use maybe 3 or 4 buttons, but how often are there games that have 6?

Never, or possibly so rare it doesn't matter. We use 4 on our cabinets, purely for occasional 4-player console gaming, but even this is probably overkill - 3 is plenty in most circumstances, but 2 is normal for most worthwhile 4-player games.

Alrighty, so I have counted my buttons so I'll break it down, let me know if you see anything I might want to change:

Player 1:
6 red buttons
1 mag-stik plus
player 1 start
1 orange button for coin

Player 2
6 blue buttons
1 mag-stik plus
player 2 start
1 orange button for coin

player 3:
4 black buttons
1 mag-stik plus
player 3 start
1 orange button for coin

player 4:
4 yellow buttons
1 mag-stik plus
player 4 start
1 orange button for coin

At this point, i'm not sure if I want to add a trackball yet or a spinner. I'm mainly going to be using fighting games in it. So no use in buying them. So if I buy all that i'm at $259.40 + Shipping from Ultimarc. Starting to ponder if I just need to buy 2 dedicated 8-way sticks instead of a mag-stik plus (switching) because they'll only be using 8-way controls, unless there's a 4-player pacman game LOLOL j/k. Anyway. I found a 4-player coin door from happs that I'll buy, but I'm not really sure about how to wire it up if I want to actually use the coin door. I'll do some more research. I think I saw a thread somewhere about how to make it work.
