Donkey Kong Jr Compatible PCBs?
« on: October 30, 2009, 01:42:41 pm »

I have a Donkey Kong Jr, cocktail game, that I've had for a while.  It needs a recap, but otherwise, in excellent condition.  I almost sold it, but my kids have now gotten to an age where they like all the video games.  Go figure.

So now I'm trying to expand things a bit (As if I needed an excuse to do that!)

I'm in the process of building a wiring harness/switch to have multiple PCBs in my cocktail.  Pretty easy if I can get the parts to all fit inside the cabinet.  I'm using some examples from Bob Roberts site.

I was going to take my DKJR and have the Double Donkey Kong conversion done on it, but I think for the $160, I can give myself better options.

So here is my question:  What other PCBs are compatible with Donkey Kong Jr?  I'm pretty sure the 2-board Donkey Kong is plug and play.  I think also Donkey Kong 3 is the same.    I think possibly Special Forces on a DK board?  Are there any other PCBs/or roms that can plug in to the same Nintendo edge connector?

If all goes while I will be able to switch between 3 PCBs, with an externally accesible rotary switch.    I was thinking I could do DKJR, DK (with the multigame/high score on it?) and DK3 or anything else that might work.

Popeye I believe? Would have to double check but I believe Popeye was one.

Popeye might be compatible edge-connector wise, but if you try to use it in your DK Jr cab, you're gonna have to turn your head sideways to play, since it's a horizontal game ;D

Thanks for the replies.  I think Mario Bros is also the same pinout, based on what I found here:  http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=Nintendo_Classic.html

I think that again is a horizontal game, so it will fit, but won't be playable.   I also found out that 8 ball action runs on a DK PCB, so I'm guessing there are some more "games" available, even though it's really still DK.

I think my best bet is to just stick DK or DK3.

Yes, there is that :)  Rotating monitor?  Probably not worth it... I really like my Double-DK. However, if you're building a switcher also consider DK-2. DK, DK-Jr, DK-3, and DK-2 would make a nice multi-cabinet.
