If it's MAME you're talking about, MOUSE needs to be set to 1 in the mame.ini.

The MAME ini file is located in the MAME directory, just open it with note pad and the entry where it says MOUSE =0 to a 1. then save the file.

What version number?
(Current and recent mames don't have that second option.)

Okay, which mame32 number?

Mame32 was a variant of official mame, and shared the same version number as the matching mame it was built from.  It shares the same changes, features, and settings, too.  Version numbers is zero dot something, such as 0.135 (the current version number) or 0.99 (released 06 Aug 2005).

I downloaded the current version of MAME and it seems to have fixed the issue, although for some reason i can't seem to load some games like asteroids and a few others? Oh well, the main thing is that the tracball issue seems to have been solved at this point.

Thanks to all who pointed me in the right direction to fix this problem, and i appreciate your patience for my unintentional "double post" on the subject!

Sometimes, especially if you jump a large number of versions of mame, a romset may have been fixed (aka changed), so that the old romset doesn't match what the new mame is looking for.  (mameFAQ)  If you look up a game in MAWS, it will list which versions of mame the romset changed.

Which is why again I ask, "what version of mame32 were you using?"  (Help menu & click About.)  Trackballs worked in older versions also, but the causes could have been different, and thus the how to fix is different, too.

Or you can update your romsets and forget the old mame32.
