Adding a 4 way stick - CP Modification
« on: October 27, 2009, 11:32:15 am »
I've attached a pic of my control panel as it is currently. I am replacing my Ultimarc Magic Stik Pluses with Happ competitions. I am going to add a 4 way stick in one of the 2 marked places.  I am pretty limited as I don't want to rebuild the entire panel. I know above the trackball will hinder Golden Tee play. And location B makes it a little uncomfortable to play Donkey Kong and such that require an action button (Although I play Tempest with the spinner and the P1 buttons now).

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

You probably remember me from such films as `The Revenge of Abe Lincoln' and `The Wackiest Covered Wagon in the West'

If you can, shoehorn it in where your pause button is and move pause to location A or B.

So you've ditched switchable sticks to go with the extra expense and clutter of a dedicated 4-way? That's like going back 5 years.

The Ultimarcs just have such a short throw. They are superior in construction, but they don't feel right.

Yeah, Flake mentioned the same thing. Only problem is that the action buttons are beneath the stick...probably will feel funky.

So really it would be better to get bat-tops with a softer, longer throw that are 4/8-way switchable (like Sanwas) or programmable (U360) than try to retro-fit a stick that is likely to be uncomfortable to play on due to a compromised location.

I hadn't seen the Sanwas, but it looks like you have to switch them from below. The U360s are an option. Although I'm in the middle of changing FE's, so messing with more software is a big turn off at the moment. I wish I'd not already bought all the replacement sticks. Maybe I'll stand pat until winter and make the decision then.

So does anyone use U360's? If so, how do they feel? I'd love to hear a comparison between them and the Magic Stik. If they have that super short throw, it does me zero good.

Come to think of it, I wonder if there is an adjustment that can be made with the Magic Stik. I doubt it with the magnetic centering, but that would be a sweet solution.

Without a restrictor, the U360 has a HUGE throw. I use the circular restrictor and the throw feels fine. When I used Happ Universals, THOSE had a short throw closer to what you're talking about, and I can tell you the U360 with a restrictor is way better than that.

Add a hard spring and you've got a great stick. The U360 is worth the price.
