Starting new upright. Can't decide on CP setup.
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:17:48 pm »
Hey guy's. I use to have an account here ages ago but forgot what it was and have since changed emails.  :banghead:
(this turned out to be long winded...sorry)

So I will be starting my 4 player upright soon and need to clarify some things about the CP. I want to make the control panel as pleasant looking as possible and be able to play as many games as I can. My buddies and I get a kick out of surfing through the wacky games we have never heard of or seen before on my cocktail cabinet and I can only assume the same thing will happen with the new upright.
So far I was planning on the typical 4 play CP.

4 x 8-ways  (6 or 7 buttons for 1 & 2. 3 or 4 for players 3 & 4)
1 x trackball
1 x spinner
1 x 4-way
2 x light guns

Like I mentioned above I already have a cocktail vertical only MAME cabinet. It currently plays the available 2 player 8-way and 4-way vertical games. There are no spinners or trackballs. With that being said, I want to try and play most all other games that the cocktail cabinet cannot physically play (including vertical trackball/spinner games).
I have been trying to figure game controls out using mamedata2. It works great and has been a big help but I still have questions.
Here are some of questions:

What do I miss out on by not having two 4-way joys? Are there many good games that are 4-way 2 player simulations?

The same question applies to the trackball and spinners too. How many decent games won’t be playable with a single trackball and spinner? (Super Sprint is one of my fav games. I have read people enjoying it using spinners for the wheel?).

Do you see anything critical missing that will prevent me from playing some good games.

My other thought is to start out with a frankinpanel and at a later date I can build a second upright and move some controls over to it. I could also put spinners and trackballs on the cocktail too.

Note that I am not considering driving games for now.

Thanks!

The next person will suggest U360's for P1 and P2.

Use U360s for Player 1 and 2, and get rid of the 4-way stick.   :applaud:

I like the idea of the u360, I just wish I could try it out first. I think it will work great for most every game I play. But I do enjoy MK and SF and would hate to lose the feel of the original 8-way's. Every post I read about it people are putting in restrictor plates, different springs, posts, etc. I would hate to not be happy with it out of the box.

I think I will do what I planned before. Not being able to play some games will "force" me to make another cab which is half the fun of it anyways.

Any thoughts on the track ball and spinner?

Thanks.

Yes, get a U-Trak from Ultimarc and a TurboTwist 2 from Groovy Game Gear - that way you could get the mini-wheel attachment and your panel will have most bases covered.

Ditch the dedicated 4-way, that's sooo yesterday.Go with the U360, or for a stiffer feel get some Mag-stick pluses, which are easily switched without even lifting the panel.
