reusing my P4 260 3.0 HT
« on: October 25, 2009, 01:37:14 pm »
Hey all,
I've got a spare mobo l'd like to put to good use in updating my hardware configuration.

My current setup is using an old emachines T1762 chassis & mobo which has been fitted with an Intel P4 2.0 (Willamette). Works great for a good proportion of stuff, until I got my AimTrak and wanted to start playing Area51. Now, I need more, MORE, MORE.

The board I have is an ASUS P5KPL-CM. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131288  Manufacturer's website tells me that I can run this with a variety of socket 775 CPU's, including the P4 260 3.0ghz HT I have lying around (I swapped it out of my home theater PC). Documentation on the CPU tells me it runs on an 800 mhz front side bus.

My question is this: what speed memory should I buy for this mobo? I've only got 2 slots, so I'm pretty much fixed on 2 sticks of 2 gigs each, but I'm not sure if I should shoot for 800mhz memory, or opt for the faster 1066 speed. I'm considering the 1066 RAM because I might try to overclock the CPU to push it a bit faster than 3.0. Can anyone share opinions on whether this would be achievable with any stability? I know these single core P4's run pretty hot to begin with, so I'm not sure if trying to overclock it will cause too many issues with keeping it cool.

If it's not worth it to overclock it, then I could just go with 800 mhz RAM. On the other hand, this mobo will also support Core 2 Duo chips too (all the way up to 1600 FSB), so if I wanted to try overclocking a Core 2 Duo, I'm pretty sure I'll need RAM with enough headroom to do it -- or 1066. But then I'd need to buy a new CPU = more money above the RAM.

Thoughts anyone? Is the performance boost going from a 3.0 single core to a Core 2 Duo in the 2.5 range that noticeable that it's worth doing? Or should I just take the 'bird in the hand' approach and use my spare single core 3.0 and match it with 2 gigs of 800 mhz DDR2 ram?

Side note: I AM planning on installing Vista 64 bit on this setup when I get that far.

Thanks for your comments in advance -- I appreciate it.
Man, will my cab EVER be finished?
