The New Yankee Workshop series is coming to an end :(
« on: October 23, 2009, 11:34:50 pm »
I'm sure a lot of other people interested in woodworking (across the US and even in the UK) will be saddened to hear that the New Yankee Workshop series is ending.

Norm Abram will still be on "This Old House", but after the coming 21st season airs, there won't be any new episodes of NYW.

I for one will miss this show terribly - it was something to look forward to on Sunday.

It always tickled me to hear him say "draws".  :lol
"And I used my 7/16" Dovetail bit on the back of the draws."

I wonder why no one will replace him, like they did with This Old House. 'The NEW New Yankee Workshop'? Perhaps a change in locale to somewhere down here, 'Skeeter and Bo-Jack's Whittlin With Shotguns' would be a fun program...

For his last episode, He should build a arcade cabinet and have Bob Villa help him.  ;D
It's not that serious

That would be great, I love Norm, Bob Vila is ok, if he didn't act like he knows everything, which he does but you shouldn't act that way, i don't know, annoys me. But norm is great, I'm from Mass and that show was on growing up, I keep hearing "now we are going to do some ASSSEMMBAALLY"...It's amazing how good he is.

I agree, he should build a cabinet.

I have a suggestion, we could replace him with OND.....although i doubt he could build a futuristic arcade cabinet in one episode......

Wow.  I just realized that I have been following Norm since the early 90's.  Be nice if he raffled off that workshop of his. ;D

I'll miss that show. But he always did piss me off because most of us don't have half of the tools necessary to do ANYTHING he did on there.

At least the Woodwright's Shop is still on. Of course I don't have half those tools either.

Yeah, stuff is so much easier with a perfect set of professional shop quality tools that are always sparkling clean and have 2500sqft to work with...

...and I was never comfy taking advice from a guy who never uses blade guards or eye protection.   :laugh2:

Early in every episode he taps his BCGs and says, "there is no more important safety rule than to wear these - safety glasses"

Those kind of shows are fascinating, and I've enjoyed them for a long time, but regardless of how good they are, you really never seem to see the sausage getting made.

I mean, they'll take 2 weeks of tedious, boring work, and gel it down into a 15 second montage that looks like he waved a magic router over a just felled log and it turns into a queen anne armoire.

So they tend to be a little disheartening to me, but fascinating none the less.

Sad to hear it's going away

That's why (cleverly) Norm tells you to write in for the plans to build that stuff. Frankly, I wouldn't/couldn't watch him make each dado cut or dovetail every drawer. As long as I see the important steps involving tools I could never afford, I'm entertained.

Hopefully they run the series on DIY Network, after Ask This Old House.

Back in 1985 I was 10yrs old when I first discovered, "This Old House", I fell in love with the construction process and it inspired me to become an electrician. So for this I owe Norm.

Ol' Bob Villa was on TOH at that time... 1979-1989

This is saddening. Ive been watching TOH and NYW since I can remember :( I'd never consider building my own MAME if I never met that bunch. I guess this is the reason for Norm being more active in this seasons TOH project.

Supposedly my dad was in the same dorm and maybe even a few classes with Norm back in their college days.  Unfortunately my dad is a classic underachiever so he delivers pizza and I had to learn what little woodworking skills I have on my own.

Definitely a good show and I'm sad to hear it's the end.  I'm off to see if I can find some NYW via bit torrent!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Wow... NYW is going off the air? I used to watch them all the time until my grandparents died. Since I didn't have cable after that, I guess I missed a lot.

That's why (cleverly) Norm tells you to write in for the plans to build that stuff.

Wonder if one can download the plans? I don't recall him ever saying that, but some of the projects were interesting enough for a lookover on the plans.

This is sad news for me too.  I really wish they'd come up with some sort of similar replacement show.

He sells the plans on the NYW website.

Sad news indeed. If the episodes were a little more "everyman", maybe viewership would have been a bit higher (if that's even why it's going off the air).

I just recently started watching them from the beginning.  It's fun to watch how his shop evolved as funding increased.  :)  I gotta get me one of those mortising drills he is always using... ::)
