Local Arcade art files backup?
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:07:16 am »
Hey guys, I was wondering since localarcade is down, does anyone have all the artwork backed up from the site?  It would be a shame to lose all that art.  If anyone has it or would send it to me, I would host it all on a new website.

Sir woogie if you should read this, maybe you could send me the files?  I would be more than happy to pay for material and shipping.

I have about a quarter of it backed up but not all of it.

I have all the PP guts and a cockpit cabinet at work to serve as reference so I'll probably do a repro of the cockpit cabinet. I was counting on the artwork on localarcade because my chances of someone doing a real repro of the artwork seem to be slim to none. Hope it comes back!

Sorry guys, meant to post hear sooner. Somehow The abuse department at GoDaddy took the domain out as they say spam has been sent with the address. The problem is, their evidence shows it's just someone including the URL for the site, not relaying through it. It's just taking me a bit to get this through their legalese to get it reinstated (without charging me $75 dollars!).

I think I'll be fine once I get through all their red tape. But, thank you for the kind offers. I'll be sure to put up a paypal link. Someday I'll get to cleaning things up better.

2 months have gone by. Wondering what the status of localarcade.com is, or if anyone seems to have a backup of all the art. (including bitmap)

Shoot I was looking for that blue space CP background alot of folks use.  I'm pretty sure it was on this site.  It's the one that looks like these discs of different charater (pacman etc) are spinning away from the center.   Anyone know where else this might be?  It was a large bitmap image if I remember correctly.

I didn't see this earlier, but if you still need the file, post in the artwork section.  It's called Rom's character fusion or fusion explosion.  Plenty of people have it on email that they can send (Encryptor, Arzoo etc came up in various threads from the search).

You may also send a message to Scott at Mamemarquees to see if he can email it to you.  I know it's been uploaded there before.  I'm not sure if he can or not but it's another place to try.

Good luck.

IIRC, saint was pretty clear on not wanting to host copyrighted artwork.

Having said that, there are a number of people, like zorg, who would be happy to.

Woogie, if they still have your domain blacklisted, I might be able to help.

At one of my recent jobs, I was the head of the abuse department for a major ISP.  I'm very knowledgable of spam and how to dissect spoofed headers, and have worked with several ISPs and registrars to clear these things up.

Let me know if they're still accusing you of spam, and send me a copy of one of the messages (as an attachment).  I can analyze it for you and tell you what to tell them.  :D

Nah, it's proven already that it wasn't me doing it. They just want $100 to leave them or $200 to stay with them (great extortion plan). I've not been able to nudge out of the costs, so I'll have to figure something else out. Over the holiday break I'm probably going to temporarily bring it up on another domain I have.

Yeah, I've seen some of these businesses do that.  I especially liked the one that would blacklist half the domains out there each week.  You could pay $50 to have them delist you, but they say there is no guarantee that you won't get blacklisted again in a week.  Which usually happened.

Definitely need to be careful who you listen to blacklisting advice from, as that company was a scam, pure and simple.

I'd be more than happy to host the files I have on my mediafire account....most of the files I do have are screenshots and box scans for snes,nes,genesis,tg16,n64 etc. let me know, though I do hope localarcade comes back because it's a freaking awesome site and I love it!

I don't think this is a question of where the files can be hosted.  I think it's more a question of how to get the website back up and running.  I personally think a mirrored storage solution would be best for both bandwidth and accessibility reasons.  As long as the files are still SOMEWHERE, I'm sure they will be back at some point (either at the web site, or with Saint hosting them).

sirwoogie,

Any updates? Any thing else we can do to help? If it's back to money being the issue, I would be very willing to give you what I can. I think others would too. Local Arcade has been an invaluable resource, and I personally am holding off on getting my art printed until I know I can do a full search of your site to find the rest of the things I need.

Please tell us if we can do anything.

I have a web server with ample space and monthly bandwidth and would be willing to use it to mirror the files, at least until the original site can be brought back up.

Using the web archive link, I was able to retrieve a few of the screenshots that they backed up but they didn't backup any files that were more than 10 Mb.  So I wasn't able to grab the visual pinball screenshots, NES, SNES, N64 and others.  In the meantime, if someone could upload some of these on rapidshare or megaupload for the others, that would be great.  I'd be willing also to donate to SirWoogie so he can get LocalArcade back up with someone else, not those SOB's...

what's the deal with this site?

is it ever coming back up?

it can't be a matter of just money to godaddy to get it back up because there are plenty of interested hobbyists who would put up enough money to cover getting it back online.

i guess it would be one thing if all the art came from one person but a lot of that artwork was the result of multiple people contributing to the hobby.

i completely understand the costs behind keeping that thing up for so long in terms of hosting and bandwith but we're going on 4+ months now without any resolution to this.

can someone give the community some concrete dates or at a minimum throw all the files on a torrent and let it rip so at least we can have something.

not trying to flame, just kind of frustrated that something i looked forward to giving to and taking from is just plain gone over what what initially said to be a $70-200 issue.

It's a good permanent solution if the site isn't coming back.  If updates are likely, then a site would be better (or at least someone to maintain the torrent and add the new files).
