Animated snapshots and first-time-load bug fix
« on: October 14, 2009, 11:15:45 am »
First, please fix the bug with the first time you load a game. The problem, as you may have noticed, is that the first time you start MaLa and launch a game, after the loading screen appears, instead of showing the game screen, the MaLa layout appears for a second, and then the game. That's pretty annoying. This only happens the first time. I don't know if this happens with all emus. I only use MAME, and my layout is running at 320x240. I think this problem only happen on fullscreen and it's not my computer's fault. I've tried in other computers. The problem doesn't happen if you use a window for the loading screen.

Second, an idea that I think I've already mentioned: animated snapshots. Videos take too long to load, take too much hd space and stress the cpu. Spaps are better in my opinion. However, if we could have title snaps and in-game snaps, that would bring another dimension to the frontend, apart that it would add some dynamism. It would be as easy as giving the user to enable an option to specify one folder for normal snaps and alternative forlders for other kind of snaps. MaLa would show normal snaps, as always, but if a snap with the same name is on the alternative folder, MaLa would cycle between then with the time interval the user specifies. Moreover, remember that there are some collections of title snaps, instructions snaps, etc already available to download on the web.

Please condider this. For me, MaLa, with my custom frontend, is close to perfection. I don't need more features and I don't want them. Just add this and it will be heaven.

I've just downloaded a file from http://www.mametitles.com/ with all the title snaps and they have the same name of the normal in-game snaps. That simplifies it all: two folders with unzipped snaps. You set MaLa to look for snaps in \snaps\ and in \snapstitle\ and thats all. Loadman, would this be too hard to implement? Did you like the idea?

In case this idea is not considered for a new version, do you know if it would be possible to implement it as a plugin?
