classic cab value ?
« on: July 16, 2003, 11:03:23 pm »
the community college down the road has (the main ones i remember) original defender, centipede, and SF2 cabs. do these things have any real collector value?

they have quite a bit more classic games too, that dont come to mind right now.
i should go by there with a digicam and get some shots

Depending on the condition, the Centipede and the Defender are worth coolness points.

Please, get some pics.  If only for the coolness factor.

nb: where you at?

An ORIGINAL, non-converted sf2 cab might actually be worth more to some collectors than the classics.  Poor, poor sf2, it gets converted more times than a skitzo trans-vestite. ;)

It also depends. Are they empty cabinets, or are they games? Empty cabinets really are not worth much (unless they are popular games with intact sideart, and then maybe $50-$100).

If they are complete and working, then $500-$1200 each for Defender/Centipede and I severely doubt the Streetfighter 2 was a dedicated unit (only a tiny percentage of them were), so the price on that one depends on a lot of factors (largely condition and monitor size).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

What community college is this?  Are they selling, or are you just curious/thinking of making the owners an offer?

I could use a good game of dedicated Centipede.. or better yet the dedicated Centipede itself :P

i need to go by there and verify a bit, but they were all working, taking money from poor college students :). and its been a year since ive been in there, but theyve been there for many many years --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- that. ive always thought of making offeres on them, but also always had a feeling that others no doubt already had but they arent selling.

my old dentist used to have a battezone (i think, its been so long. tanks, green vector grafx, u put ur head in the 'HUD') that you could play for free while waiting. but that was a long time ago

Eh, you might want to play them, but don't waste your money buying them. Any game that has actually seen 20 years of real duty is gonna be in pretty bad shape.

Much better to save your money for something that went off the arcade floor back in 84 and has been stored/home use ever since.

More like from an auction, where it is in even worse shape but cheaper (at least that's what I go for -- would probably end up replacing or refurbing the whole thing either way).

I need to quit putting off asking *my* old dentist about some games in his waiting room.  He had a Ms. Pac, a 1942, and.. don't remember what else, one other.. but I remember 2 were broken and 1942 was fixing to break down (heavy grafx corruption, no sound, heavy rusting on the machine, practically no CPO left).. just don't see what the point of keeping these around is when they don't even work, maybe he'll let me just haul them off *shrug*

I think that the "collectors value" depends a lot in wich place are the cabs being sold!

Sometimes those type of cabs are found hidden in farms, caves, "everywhere" and they are given for free...

I'll say that 200 bucks for a mint condition SF2 is a fair price! :)

About the centipede, it should be a little more expensive... ;D
