questions about wiring my super8

okay ive completed my cp, and now its time to wire.  but i have some newbie questions to ask.  first of all, i want one of them to be 4-way...seeing as that you can switch to 4 way.  how is this done?  i know its not the best and it may suck for some of you, but thats my option and so how do i switch it from 8 way to 4 way?  

second, when i start to wire (never done any wiring before in my life) i will take my cutter/crimper tool that i ordered and cut the wire and strip the tip of it so it will go into the quick disconnects.  but my question is, how many wires will go into the FIRST button that will be grounded.  does it require just one wire to ground each of them?  anybody understand what im saying?  there are 2 slots on the disconnects to stick wires into, however in some diagrams, it shows one wire going into the disconnect on the first button and then daisy chained to the second and so forth.  is this right?

Each button needs two wires.  It kind of depends on your encoder or hacked keyboard on how the wires will be setup.  I am using a hagstrom encoder that has 36 inputs and 4 grounds, so each button is connected to an individual input, but I divided up my control pannel into sections to share grounds.  So all of player one controls are daisy chained from one ground, all of player two is daisy chained from one ground, the starts and trackball buttons are daisy chained on one ground, and my other function buttons are daisy chained on one ground.  Now the complete cp could be daisy chained to one ground but since I have four its nice to break it up incase there is a problem with a connection, can quickly narrow down where the problem is.

As for the Supers, I actually have them on my cp but have not really played around with them yet so really cant answer your question on switching them.

To put the Super in "pseudo-4way", install the actuator (shown green below) such that the small end is towards the joystick base.




I don't quite follow your disconnect question.  Two wire slots in the disconnect?  There should be a small barrel, probably 1/16" to 3/32" in diameter that you insert the wire into and then you crimp it.  For grounding, you will start out with an "end" ground that will have a single wire, then you will successively insert two wires into the rest of the GND terminals and daisy-chain them.  When you are finished, you will essentially have a long wire with multiple disconnects on it that will terminate at the GND connection on your interface.

well i just wanted to make sure im doing it right.  my female quick disconnects look like little wine bottles....bear with me here.....and what im doing is for daisy chaining, take two of the wires, and twisting them together, then bending them in half at the tips (not the whole wire, just the stripped part of both of them after they have been twisted) and then putting them in the small end of the disconnect.  then i crimp that end smashing the metal down to hold them, and attaching them to the ground switch.  is this right?  just tell me yes or no, and if not, then tell me whats better.  PLEASE!

That sounds like a reasonable approach Hulk...  Your first description was a little confusing (or didn't sound right) regarding quick disconnects.  Your latter post about twisting them together and crimping sounds right.  

Oscar's diagram shows the "quasi-4-way" maneuver for the supers...

*shrug* is there another question? you should be on your way to being wired up, I imagine =P  If not, post another query here =P

EDIT just give the crimped wires the "tug" test.  If with a moderate tug they don't fall out of the disconnect you're probably in good shape!

PS You might want to take a step back, and take some deep breaths brother... I think you missed your protein shake, vitamins, and prayers by accident =P

Sounds right.  There is no need to bend the 2 wires over unless you are doing it to get extra wire to crimp on.  If it works it is OK.

Just to elaborate on what Boba said... the fold over technique is only necessary if your wires are too skinny for the the holes they are going to be crimped in.  The folding over themselves helps give the crimp, have more surface area to clamp down on.

It'll take some effort to remove the damn E clip  (or is it a C clip.. i forget) but it will come off.. just be sure to keep an eye on it... as it will fly off and you'll have trouble finding it if you lose sight of it (and need ANOTHER trip to the hardware store)

Needle nose pliers and a screw driver and like 3 sets of hands will do the trick =P

Hey... it's not problem to help out (most) newbies.  Just sometimes the forum isn't the best media/method to communicate/walk through questions... (unless you post pics... pics help a lot)

sometimes instantaneous communication like the byoac chat room can be better for rapid fire Q&A troubleshooting...
