Question about when this site started and BYOAC
« on: October 06, 2009, 02:17:38 pm »
I joined back in 2006, and I assume the site was much older than that.  What I've always wondered was, when the site started did people really build all of their own controls back then. i.e. make spinners etc.  Since now it seems like most of us buy our controls and interfaces, so it's really Build Your Own Arcade now, but not building the controls themselves, or is controls meant to mean like the control panel itself.  I realize this may sound odd, but it's something I've wondered about a few times.

I always checked out the main part of the site, but only joined the forums in early 2008, yeah.

Early 1998 :)  http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/BYOACWiki:About -- 11.5 years.

People did build their own spinners, hacked their own trackballs, hacked keyboards, etc.

Then that's when I first visited. I know that it was announced on Retrogames.com and I visited when it started.

Ah ok, I figured it's been around for awhile.  I clicked your link for the old stuff... this made me laugh.

"WARNING - if you're married or in a relationship, get your significant other something nice, because one day you'll look up and realize you've been in your basement for 6 weeks messing with buttons and wires, muttering words like "leaf" and "microswitch" and have no idea if you're S.O. is even still around...  Good luck :)"

So true... I had no idea what I was getting myself into here! lol
