CPU setup for Killer/Mortal/etc.. in here!
« on: July 16, 2003, 02:52:24 am »
Well, I know there's alot of newbs(I'm a newb posting, but built a Mame cab 2 years ago) looking to find out how "cheap" they can get away with when setting up their computer to play the more recent games like the MK series or even Killer instinct in Mame.  I had been out of the circle a bit the past year and jumped back in when I heard about Primal Rage and KI being emulated in Mame...  seemed as though all of the posts I read said "Don't plan on playing KI until you have a 3 or 4 GHz machine!"  Well, I picked up the ASUS A7N8X Mother board, An AMD Athlon 2700 XP, 512 DDR 2700 memory stick, and a new case from www.newegg.com for $340 to my door.  Throw in a GForce 5200 w/128MB (Ebay for around $70) and you are in business!!!
My jaw dropped when I selected KI and it played flawlessly with no sound or framerate issues at all!  I did update the bios for the board with the latest (1005).  The MK series seem to play better than I remember in the arcade! :)  Anyways, this was for all the newbies wondering what a baseline should be.  Hope it helps!  I'm off to work on my 4 player cabinet!

All the MK games work fine on my P4 1.9ghz machine (784mb ram). I haven't however tried Killer Instinct.

Im in the process of building a cab, it probably will use a AMD XP 2000/2200 (or higher if its not too expensive) so i might be okay with that.

I would think so.  I just wanted to point out that a 2.17GHz AMD optimized right will rock KI.  It's MUCH better than the U64 emu....the sound and speed is pefect with Mame!  Much thanks to those working hard on the baddest Multi Arcade Machine Emulator!!!!  ;)

Good news.

How well do you play the Crusin' on that machine of yours?

I agree that if you got the power use mame over the U64 emulator that you should use mame, however, you can play KI with U64 with a much slower computer (I remember running it with either amd 750, and possibly my 450 celeron, it was such along time ago I have no idea which rig I used it on first.)

What is the deal with the constant obsession with everyone wanting to play the 7 or 8 games in Mame with the largest hardware requirement.

My suggestion is to calm down Beavis.

Start with 1975 and play Gun Fight. When you get tired of that, move up to 1976 and play all those games, and then so on. By the time you exhaust the 2000+ games that are older than those 8 games then you will be able to buy a used computer for $50 that will run them full speed.

 ;)

I agree perfectly with that!

I still remember the times that i waited to play MK1...

I had a pentium 200 mmx and played games like kof 95 to slow...  ;D

The same thing will happen to all the emulated games!  ;D

They can't win us!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I see your point, but some of the people on this board are a younger generation and grew up putting countless hours into KI or MK, not gun fight or pong.   If these are the games that interest them, then so be it.

To each his own.

Does the video card make that much difference? I  know  does (rhetorical question), but If I'm using a wells gardner 9200 what graphics card can I use besides the 7500 radeon all in wonder if you want to play mk and ki and still get  as close to looking like a real arcade?

As I've mentioned before in response to the same comment you've made in every thread involving KI, paigeoliver, getting KI to work is one of my personal goals because it's a personally favorite game of mine.

I could just as well say "Why bother with Ms. Pacman when I can play Killer Instinct?" but I already know it's a pointless question. Why? Because Ms Pacman is a good game that lots of people enjoy. Well guess what... So are Killer Instinct, Cruisin USA, and Area 51. Given the choice between Duck Hunt and Area 51, I'd probably take the Area 51 in a heartbeat, but I know there are people here that would disagree. However, the whole point is choice and personal preference. You have yours and other people have theirs.

You think that if people didn't like these newer games they would even bother trying to emulate them? People aren't just doing it to have a complete collection. Hell, my own collection is probably missing a couple hundred games but you don't see me freaking out over it. Classics are good, but so are the newer ones. If I wasn't concerned with actually PLAYING Killer Instinct then I wouldn't care if it worked or not. However, I like the game and want to get it running so I can PLAY it. You play your games and let other people play theirs.

Ok I think any further comment on this subject would be redundant on my part...

I Played KI on my new machine (i was concerned at running this game; whole reason i got into MAME) and it ran like a champ. P4 2.5 with only 128mb RAM and 32 MB ATI.

Gun what??  and what is this pong you speak of??
JK  ;D, but I agree with the post.  Those were before my time.  I'm in the new ADD generation and I need the constant seizure-inducing flashing of beautiful graphics meshed with great game play.

Well I'm somewhere between new and old school. I still remember growing up with Ms Pacman, Galaga, and even Defender. However, I still step into an arcade now and then and beat the crap out of someone in random newer Capcom fighting games.

By the way, my 866MHz P3 runs the whole MK series like a champ but chokes on the CHD games.

Hee hee. I never said those games weren;t any good. Heck, I am only 25, I played them too. But I am not worried about them at the moment. Because there are a couple thousand other games I never got to play much. I can play those first, and then check out the newer games in a few years.

I'm glad you chilled out PaigeOliver!  :)  This post was to inform the "KI" and "MK" crowd!  Personally, just those 2 series are enough for me to build a cabinet.  I can play Pacman for about 10min, but these others for days!  They're truly awesome with a good sound system, arcade controls, and in the "true" form VS. a home console piece of crap.   Yes, I'm 26 yrs old, so I DO enjoy the other 1000 games with dots moving around.  ;)

I haven't had a chance to check cruisin (I haven't found it yet)

Cheers!

Cheers!

Thanks.  The atari logo has come up before.  Actually they're the logo for JL audio, but it is a nice coincidence that it appears like atari.  I didn't plan for it though.
