Memory
« on: October 04, 2009, 03:54:37 pm »
My mame computer has a Athlon 2600XP. Is there any point in having more than 1GB or RAM?? BTW, The mobo I am using can take 2GB of RAM.

After building my setup against certain spec, I've found the only real improvements in adding more RAM are front-end smoothness and quicker rom launching (ie. large roms like Neo-Geo) but that's about it.

At the moment it only has 256mb fitted. Ive not come across any issues as yet. I just wondered if it will help any of the games them selves

Probably not. It felt like I got gains in certain games in old builds of MAME, but I'd say your existing CPU spec is already overkill for the games that are working and properly supported. Plus, I still use a pre-0.106 build of MAME, before the graphics core was re-written.

Ive ordered 3Gb of RAM. 2Gb for the MAME computer and another for my desktop. I will see if it makes any difference. Ive got nothing to loose
