Shazaaam blues GPWiz40
« on: September 27, 2009, 12:15:22 am »
I recently decided to revamp my arcade cab by putting in a new old pc. While I was at it, I decided to dump the KeyWiz I was using in favor of a new GPWiz 40 thinking I was going to gain more inputs - so I purchased a GPWiz 40.

So when I wire up the GPWIz40 I scratch my head.. no Shazaaam input?!?!  :banghead:  What am I supposed to do nowwww.  Should I go back to the KeyWiz?  Is there any way to simulate a shazaaam functionality with software?   :dizzy:

I could always drill holes on the side of the controller box and install more buttons.  I'm trying to assess the most elegant way around this..

Thanks in advance~
-Ed

If this is primarily for MAME, then you can have multiple button presses activate a command in software.  You can hook up diodes to a couple inputs and connect them to a single button to make that single button press activate multiple inputs on the GP-Wiz.  There are some examples on GGG to show how to do this.

hmm wonder why diodes are required for wiring to the same button..

both inputs would be positive and they both use a common ground it does'nt seem like the inputs would need diodes to keep any current out.

so maybe randy can explain it.
Anyone got change for a dollar?

Hmm So lets say ShiftButton + Button1 should open the config in Mame, I wire both buttons to a diode which then connects to the GPWiz port?   Thus both buttons are required to be pressed before the port gets the signal?

By diodes do you mean the ones that enable a one button shazaam function sold by GGG?  If so I may have a couple of them...

If that works it would be great. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't want to install buttons on the control box because then I would lose the possibility of later having a swappable panel.

If you are using MAME, this functionality is already there, as stated.  No need for diodes or any of that stuff, unless you want to make an extra dedicated button which uses a shifted combo function.

Just pick any unused input on the GP-Wiz and designate it as your "shift" (you can call it Shazaaam!, if you like ;)) button.  Then go into the input config in MAME and SELECT the function you want to assign to a shift combo.  Press the button you designated as your "shift" button and immediately thereafter, press the button you want associated with that function.  You can add as many shifted functions as you want using this method.

The only limitation is that the method outlined above is limited to being used in MAME.

Hmmm. It's sometimes helpful to have 'enter' at one's command in other circumstances. Maybe it was covered a while back: why was this function not included in the current product?
