Space Encounters runs poorly in 132 vs 115
« on: September 26, 2009, 12:45:29 pm »
Howdy-

I was running Space Encounters just fine on MAME 115.  I recently compiled & installed 132 to get several games working/working better.

MAWS shows a Space Encounters strobe fix in 115u4.  No other changes noted since then.

So, I fired up Space Encounters in 132 to see this fixed strobe light.

It's sloooooooow!  Runs at about 25-33% speed!  I tried all the video options (d3d, ddraw, etc.) but no love there.  I cranked up the frameskip to get it running at a normal speed (albeit herky jerky) & the strobe effect doesn't really seem very different in 132 vs 115.

Any insight in what's making this so slow or a comparison of somebody who's got it working well before & after the strobe fix to see if it's really all that different?

Thanks!
-Jason

the discrete sound circuits are now emulated properly, video emulation is also more accurate.  Both of these are very demanding.

That said, it runs at 700% speed on a 3ghz C2D, so to only get 33% speed something must be wrong with your setup, or you're running on antiquated hardware.

Howdy-

Thanks for the reply.  I do indeed have a modest system: Pentium 4 @ 1.5GHz.

However, all of the discrete sound work & video work was done *before* 115 & my Space Encounters runs splendidly in 115.  The only thing that changed between 115 & 132 (the 2 builds that I'm using) is the strobe light fix.  (MAWS entry pasted below)

Kooky.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
-Jason

0.115u4: Zsolt Vasvari fixed stobe light in Space Encounters.
0.114: Derrick Renaud emulated all sounds except the screech and wind sounds in Space Encounters. Replaced Samples sound with Discrete.
0.112u2: Canim fixed mapping of spaceship controls in Space Encounters.
0.112u1: Derrick Renaud updated Space Encounters to use the new PORT_REMAP_TABLE.
0.111u6: Adam Bousley emulated the trench circuit and Zsolt Vasvari implemented flickering of the strobe light in Space Encounters, to be eventually connected with artwork.
0.111u4: Zsolt Vasvari and Derrick Renaud added SN76477 sound effect and lamp outputs to Space Encounters. Changed 8080 CPU clock speed to 1996800 Hz. Added SN76477 sound. Fixed rom names.
0.111u1: Robert fixed gfx glitches in Space Encounters, most notably the white line at the right edge of the screen. Changed visible area to 232x224. Added Samples (Invaders) sound.
28th July 2006: Guru - Space Encounters (Midway 1980) and other games just arrived in 2 huge boxes. I think most of these are just for fixing issues in MAME (snd/gfx etc). Big thanks to Tingoes.
14th April 2001: Mathis Rosenhauer fixed the Space Encounters overlay to display correctly.
5th May 2000: Mathis Rosenhauer fixed a bug in Space Encounters artwork handling.
0.37b1: Changed palettesize from 256 to 32770 colors.
24th March 2000: Zsolt Vasvari added overlay support (Artwork) to Space Encounters.
0.33b3: Al Kossow and Brad Oliver added Space Encounters (Midway 1980).
24th August 1997: Kevin Klopp dumped Space Encounters.
