Detachable control panel tops?
« on: September 26, 2009, 02:02:17 am »
In designing my cabinet, I'm torn between building a 2-player setup w/ spinner and 4-way, versus a 3-player setup.  The idea of detachable panels is appealing, since then I could just make both and swap when needed.

My idea was to have everything wired to the underside of the top panel, including the controllers.  Then all that would need to feed into the underside of the panel would be USB cables, which could then connect to a HUB in the base box for the control panel.

For attaching/removing, I was thinking those metal clips which function like latches when closing a lid (not sure what they are called).  Perhaps 4 or 6 of those would be enough to hold the top panel on, but it could be removed by lifting with enough force.

Has anyone ever done this before?  Are there examples of detachable panels on the forum somewhere?  I tried searching, but didn't find any specific examples w/ pictures.

thats the way im going, with changeable panels, cause i dont want a bunch of controls cluttering the panel up.

the things you're looking for are called panel clamps.

my guess is one on each side should do the trick in most cases.. they put considerable force on teh panel, i can't see one moving on ya.

if it does i'd just put some blocks of wood on the edges under the panel to keep it from sliding.
Anyone got change for a dollar?
