Jamma cabinet how do i hook up stereo sound?
« on: September 21, 2009, 07:03:10 pm »
Hey guys i just got a new cabinet and it has a jamma wiring harness and im trying to figure the best way i can get sound from a xbox 360 to it. The wiring goes like this, from speakers it runs to a amp, from the amp it runs to a control knob, then from there it runs to the jamma harness. How can i hook up RCA wires to this? Thanks

So you want to go from stereo sound to mono? I would just bypass the harness altogether.

Well i spliced some rca wires coming out of the xbox and spliced them into the jamma harness for audio. I get sound, its just not very loud. I have the volume knob to the max so im not sure whats going on with it.

Is there an adjustment on the amp itself ?

Oh, and that won't be stereo set up like that.
It would just be left and right mixed into mono.

No there isnt any adjustment on it. This cabinet is fairly new, only about 6months old. So i dont think anything should need to be replaced. How would i get stereo if i wanted it?

Sweet cabinet.

Looks like that amp is stereo capable..... what do the two smaller connectors on the right hand side go to ?
They look like they would be the left and right inputs.

Is that a red LED indicating power is on ?
Looks to require 12volts.

Yes the LED is indicating it is getting power, it has two wires running to the 12v spot on it. And yes the other side runs to the left and right speakers...

So the two little connectors go to the speakers ?
That would be the OUTPUTS then.

But labeled next to the bigger connector it says OUT_R and OUT_L.   (?)

VR_R and VR_L being the volume control.
12v and Ground on the ends.

Where do the two OUT wires run from that bigger connector on the amp go?

Is there anything connected to the JAMMA harness right now?

Just trying to get a good visual on what you have going on in there.

Nothing is coming out from the two out posts. And no nothing is connected to the jamma harness...

Heres a little diagram of that larger connector

Ground - Black wire coming out
S Ground - Gray wire, same color as the ground at the speakers so that must be it for sure
VR-R - Same color as whats going to right side speakers
VR-L - Same color as whats going to left side speakers
OutR - Nothing
OutL - Nothing
12V - 12v's is connected coming from what looks like a computer psu...

Ok..... once I saved your pics I could read the amp labeling a little clearer.

The two little connectors on the right side that only has two wires each are clearly labeled SPK1 and SPK2. (Red/Black wires, White/Black wires)
So those should be the outputs going directly to the speakers themselves.

The Red/White wires on the larger connector should be coming from the volume control.

Now what you need to know is what else leads INTO the volume control ?

The input and output of the volume control are on that CN2 connector by the volume knob.
L_OUT and R_OUT should be the Red/White wires.
You need to find the wires that go to the L_IN and R_IN and then follow those to where they come from and show us what you have there.

Did this cabinet come with a game installed in it or is just just sold as a basic JAMMA cabinet?

Its was just sold as basic jamma cab no game. I took the speaker covers off last night and there is only one regular speaker in each side, there is a hole and wires for a tweeter but it was never installed? I looked at those wires and they are the same red/white in color and i believe that lead to the jamma harness?

Just on the JAMMA harness there will be only two wires for audio.....
One is the + (pin 10 on the parts side)
One is the - (pin L on the solder side)
(this is mono)

So if you are trying to connect RCA style cables into that then the shield for both cables will go to the - wire ....... and the main conductor for both cables will go to the + wire.

But you need to verify exactly how the cabinet is wired FROM the amp TO the JAMMA harness first.
Since it appears to be a stereo amp, but JAMMA is mono..... I would think that the two Red/White wires going from the amp to the JAMMA harness would be tied together somewhere. This is what I'm trying to verify.

Somebody on another forum mentioned that jamma boards have built in amps and this may just be a really small amp to help out a little.

Ok this is kinda weird, i had it plugged up in another room while working on it. Anyways i noticed whenever i touched any metal on it i would get a very light shock.  :dunno ... So i looked everywhere trying to find something not wired right, i said screw it and moved it into my room. All the metal shocking stopped, why would this be? Something is weird about that outlet in the other room i guess...

There is clearly a short somewhere and your cab isn't grounded properly. The electrons found you a more effective route to ground in the old location, but things may be different in the new location. It is unlikely the plug at issue, unless it lacks a ground pin which is fairly common I guess (!).

Pull the outlet cover and see if it's properly grounded in the wall.
