Ah!  A DOS n00b.

The first line will delete everything on the 'C' drive.  Then it will start your CD-ROM support, unless (of course) after deleting everything the support files are gone.

I am a DOS noob.
I don't know anything about DOS apart from that it stands for "Data Organising Sequence".
Thanks for filling me in on that.
By the way how do you learn about DOS? I would like to use it instead of XP for my cab.

DOS for Dummies.  Serieously.  I have the DOS for Dummies quick reference book.  Had that book for who knows how long.  I use it all the time when writing bat files.

www.freedos.org too:)

BTW, you would be happier with windows on your cabinet, especially if you want to take advantage of windows only features of mame.

OK cool, thanks for that. I originally wanted to run just MAME32 with XP so I might do that ( or maybe front end it with MAMEWah, it looks kinda cool & everyone seems to love it ).

the /Y is the yes confirmation. so it wont ask you anything --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- nuking it all.

not that it cant be undeleted anyway.

I remember when undelete didn't exist... (and that may be saying alot for someone that is still in college).

I still have the DOS book that came with my first computer. It's like an inch thick. I used that thing all the time! I used to call it my computer bible.

I even remember when DOS 6.0 came out... I can't believe I was actually excited. How lame is that?  :P

Reminds me of this time a made a batch file for this one guy in high school. (In hind site it probably wasn't very nice.) I told him it was a file organizer. It created several directories at the root, put ALL his exe's in one, ALL his COM's in another, and ALL his SYS's in another. He was running Windows 3.1 so it kind messed stuff up...

But it was a VERY organized mess...  ::)

Isn't DOS+AdvanceMAME (dos ver.)+MAMEwah the perfect config for a fast and reliable mame cab? Or there's better configs? And what about Linux?

Well to use MAMEWAH you need Windows, so the best version of MAME to use with it is the Windows commandline one.

A DOS MAME build combined with a DOS FE (running in DOS) would probably be the best configuration for an 'old' PC...

MAMEwah doesn't run in dos. And Mame runs better in windows on a fast computer.

Me too, oops, read wrong.  I remember when undelete was only available on Norton Utilities.  And when Format C:\*.* would just start writing sectors with no warning.

College was a long time ago, though

That was probably after the DOS 2.3 manuals that were just an alphabetical list of commands with some syntax and a brief description after them, right!  (I'm not kidding).

Saving/Loading your programs to cassette?
Copying code from a magazine to play the newest game?
Computers without color?
Computers without sound..not even a beep?
No GUI?
Brand new Pong machines?

OK...I think I'll go cry now...so old...so old...

Yes to all.  Now _I_ feel old.

First computers I used with DOS was version 3.3.  Before that, my first computer was an Apple IIe, but I was programming on a C64 before we owned that.

How 'bout computers without monitor. Where the "Print" statement in basic actually meant printing to a dot matrix.
Really, no beep? Even the terminals that main output device was a printer had a bell character.

More recently I remember having to pay $10 to upgrade Dos 6.21 to 6.22. Upgrade!? It was a bug fix! Like Win95a -> win95b (or sr2.5).

For performance, I think a pentium compiled official mame (win32 mame, not mame32) just because you get all the cool extra features you wouldn't get else where.  Though Mame Plus does add alot of functionality.

As for FEs right now I use lazarus on this machine because I finally have it setup and can share the config:)  I use to use arcadeos but it is outdated.  My cabinet is currently running linux and gxmame.  Once I get a windows machine in it I will have a custom FE.

For fast FEs I'd think gamelauncher is aobut as streamlined and simple as you can get for performance .

I don't see how it could execute the second line, though, if the first one deletes everything.

I'm pretty sure that is what an "Autoconfig.sys" file is, being edited in dos.
So the next time the computer is booted. That is when it would delete the hardrive. This is what some of the older nasty virii did. Edit this file, when rebooted, it would "hook it up" If this file was in the C: root. Even up to winME it would read it.

I remember going with my dad to his computer class (I used any excuse to see a real live computer back then!)  The code was stored on punch cards (anyone remember those?) and the display was a printer -- daisy-wheel, not dot-matrix...

I remember my cousin brought over his Apple II, running a knockoff of Pac-Man on the monochrome green monitor.  Instead of turning blue, a little hatch would open on the top of the ghosts heads when they were vulnerable...

Later, I learned BASIC programming at 11, using the clunky old monochrome Commodore PET.  Halfway thru the school year, my Dad bought a C64, and I used to take the tape drive with me to school so I could work on my programs at home!  Wow, exciting stuff!!  The best feature of the tape drive was that you had to go by the counter to figure out where all your programs were, meaning that if you'd removed the tape, you'd have to rewind the whole thing, reset the counter, and then fast-forward to the proper location.  And you think downloads are slow?  Try loading a 30k game off tape for 20 minutes!  ;)

And then there was the C64 disk drive!!! Heaven! Only 300 dollars bought you a floppy drive that could load that same program in only 2 minutes! Light speed!

1Up,

I not only remeber punch cards, but I actually had to work with them 18 years ago. I've also seen paper punch tapes in use.

Let's see, in chronological order I had:

Sears Telegames Pong machine.
Commodore PET computer (All in one unit, Keyboard, cassette player, b&w monitor, no sound)
Magnavox Oddyssey 2 game system with Voice! (I still have it and it still works)
Commodore Vic-20 (Many programs entered from magazines, I even wrote two games myself)
Commodore 128
Commodore Amiga 2000
Sega Genesis (I still have this one too)
Packard Bell 100 mhz pentium PC (Later upgraded to 200 mhz)
Hewlett Packard 233 mhz pentium (My current MAME PC)
E-Machines 1.8 ghz PC

Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!
American Laser Games Wrapper
O2em Rom Utility
