New Section - arcadecontrols.com File Repository!
« on: September 17, 2009, 09:10:40 pm »
A new section has joined the main site, forum, and wiki here at arcadecontrols.com -- the File Repository!

The file repository is a place to host arcade, pinball, and build-your-own related documentation, guides, pinouts, backdoor sheets, manuals, etc -- things to help the coin-op collector and the build-your-own hobbiest alike.

There's a lot of great information floating around out there on the net, but sometimes it can be hard to find or a site that you used to use has gone offline (this was prompted, by the way, by Geocities shutting down). BYOAC has been here for over 11 years now and won't be going away anytime soon. I hope providing a repository here will prove useful to the various communities.

I'm not interested in hosting arcade artwork (other than instruction cards, which I really consider documentation more than artwork), or ROMs, or warez of any kind of course. I'm open to suggestions on other categories of files to host, please let me know.

Anyone can upload and download files. Uploaded files will not be visible or downloadable until verified and approved by an admin. Registered users can vote, comment, and email postcards of files hosted on the site. User accounts are not related to the forum accounts, though I suggest you make them the same for simplicity.

Site's still in beta. The theme will be changing, and I hope to implement thumbnails shortly. Right now thumbnails are generic icons, but once implemented the thumbnails will be actual representations of the various files.

So far about 5 gigs online. Comments and feedback welcomed!

Instruction cards:  standard only or do custom count?

Custom should probably go under Build Your Own, but fire away either way :)

Don't forget that GOTTLIEB manuals cannot be uploaded as they are under copyright by Gottlieb Development LLC.

Thanks Ken - will check to see if I have any of those. I'm operating under the assumption that most arcade manufacturers won't object to operations/repair manuals being available, but will of course be mindful of those who are. No Randy Fromm stuff either, for instance, even the stuff he once freely released (per his request).

I forgot about Randy Fromm. I believe he did not want his stuff posted.

Also, I think it's all Gottlieb AND Premier Technology that's cover by Gottlieb Development LLC.

You should probably put a notice on your page that Gottlieb and Premier Technology mterials are NOT to be uploaded. Same goes for copyrighted jukebox manuals from Rowe, Rockola, Wurlitzer, Seeburg, and NSM.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes with or without legal concerns. You think a pinball section is a bad idea? http://www.pbresource.com/ has the contract with Gottlieb it looks like.

OK, after thought and review of the IPDB and The Pinball Resource, I've pulled the pinball section. It's covered well elsewhere and is a potential copyright headache.

so far i got .56, .84, .92 (which i can't get to work), and .98 (which seems to have a problem saving dip, & control settings)

Sure, that'd be fine. If I don't get a place for it setup before you upload put it in miscellaneous.

Correct, you have to sign up for an account on the repository if you want one :)

I had a look around, nice idea. Can I suggest you create an area for google sketchup plans and google sketchup models/objects?

Can do. Will it be big enough to warrant a master folder and then sub folders, or just dump it all into one Google Sketchup folder?

I previously drew up all the components of my cabinet and the cabinet itself, but had my laptop stolen and I lost them. My intention is to re-draw all the components again, so from me at least you'll get buttons, joystick, trackball etc as objects, plus my cab, control panel etc.

I have seen a few others mention that they use sketchup, so may be willing to share their designs too.

I suppose you could just dump everything into one folder, but ask people to name the files with what they are so perhaps Joystick-Magstikplus.skp or whatever? I don't think there would be enough files to break it down into different folders, but I might be wrong!

(HowardC hears a voice...)

"I command you... Rise from your grave and add files!"

I have around 200 instruction cards cleaned up for use in frontends somewhere on my hard drive but never got around to officially releasing them.  Once my registration on the file server activates I'll add them but do you think we might need a specific section for that?  I had always meant to have sirp setup an uploads section on controls.dat for cards but never got around to it.  If there was a card-specific section then this would serve the same purpose.

By the way... what do you mean by cabinet images?  I literally have hundreds of images I used for reference back in the day when I made models for 3darcade, but none of them are gonna fit in the 1024x1024 size limit.  For that matter if they did then they wouldn't be of much use.   They are very useful for determining the placment of sideart and such but only if they are of a high enough resolution that you can find a "landmark" and work out the placement in actula inches.
