not getting any response from control panel
« on: September 12, 2009, 12:28:39 pm »
working on my first mame cabinet (yeyy :) ) and have now done the control panel soldering, but im not getting any signal from the keys/joysticks.
doing my first build rather lowbudget so using GP-Wiz40-Eco USB Controls Interface from groovygamegear.

im using xp32bit on my machine for the cabinet, and JoyToKey V3.7.4 to test the panel(was no software with circut board), it finds 2joysticks but when trying to configure it dosent get any response from them.
used some old IDE cables for the wiring to get a clean wiring since ive had no issues using them for low voltage before.

attached a sketch of how ive wired my panel and pictures, im no electrician but as far as i can see its wired correctly with 1lead to each switch and a ground wire going in serial between all for each player like the included sketch in package showed.

hard to tell from pictures, but it sounds like you're doing it right.

tell you what, take a piece of wire put one end on ground and the other end on one of the inputs.

dont bother soldering them just use your fingers these are low voltages.

see if it registers a key press.. if not then either there is a software problem with you setup or the keywiz is faulty.

i use wireties with the plastic stripped off each end makes for a cheap easy to make probe.

EDIT: I should make it clear im talking about probing the keywiz it self and not your controls.. you wanna eliminate your wiring to the controls as a possible problem.

I have the same issue with a different control interface board. I tried the ground to button input and got nothing. However, one ground was attatched from the control panel, and I just put a probe in the other ground and tagged a few inputs on the board and got nothing either. Contact who you got it from and they can help you out.

when using just a cable directly between inputs and ground on the key-wiz controller evrything maps as escape.

of software im using a fresh xp sp3 install with keytojoy and direct6 for keytojoy, was no software included with board or link to any on the site.
filled out their contact form wedensday and had no reply sofar :(

hoping its a software issue as it would take a while sending it back and forth between norway and usa.

looks like your doing  it right.

one thing i ran into though was an elevator contractor who gave me his scraps one day.

its got 20 or so different colors in it. i hate to wire something with the same color although others might disagree.

have you tried hitting it?
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

2 things, either you have a crossed wire, or it's a software problem.. if you get a respones from the keywiz when touching the contacts together AT the keywiz then it's in your wiring somewhere..

you said you dont get anything from your controls so im guessing it's a software issue or a wiring issue.. i dont think the keywiz is faulty..

also so you are using 2 programs.. one to convert it from key presses to game pad, and then back again?

why?

double and tripple checked that the wiering is exactly as instructed, 1 lead to each and a serialconnected ground for each player.
when using a wirebit directly on the keywiz between ground and a input evrything respons as escape for keytojoy, tested all 40inputs.

as for software im using stripped xp for mame with only directx6 as keytojoy requires it, keytojoy and drivers for chipset/usb.
any other software i should test instead of keytojoy for the joysticks?

did a reinstall to normal xp and found a newer KeyToJoy and success!!!  :applaud:

Well congrats , I'm still having an issue with mine. I put a probe in the ground spot and have tagged all the inputs without having the board connected to my control panel and have gotten nothing. It's plugged into the keyboard port and that's it, and I did the prob and nothing. I'm getting a replacement sent out.
