New Video: Seinfeld's "The Frogger"
« on: July 14, 2003, 10:19:25 am »
I just finished uploading a special "retrogaming" treat - the final scene from the Seinfeld episode "The Frogger." (Okay, it's not a hardware review, but it is a videogaming/sitcom classic.)

George has only got three minutes of battery backup left to get his Frogger game to another electrical outlet before the high score is erased, and he's got to move it across a busy street.

http://retroblast.com/video.html

A good example of gaming nostalgia, with a unique Seinfeld twist.  Just don't cry at the ending. ;)

We need to list all of these episodes with retrogaming scenes...

I've already got a copy of seinfeld's frogger episode... I love Futurama's What If Machine II (just like dave_k's profile/sig) =P

Friends had the Ms Pacman Dirty Initials episode...

What other ones?  ( of course all the StarCade episodes )

Rampy,

If you ever get a list together of "great TV/videogame moments", please send a copy my way. I'll do my best to track down the episodes in question.

I just happened to stumble across the Seinfeld episode as I was scanning the TV schedule on my ReplayTV - one click, and I had an episode I could download to my PC and edit. Ah, technology is wonderful...  ;D

Aww, don't cry, it was obviously just a prop!  Look at the joystick handle on the ground by George -- that's no 4-way leaf, it's made out of WOOD for crying out loud!  And the way it flew apart, it was probably made of styrofoam.  I think the only time you ever saw a real frogger in the episode was during the screenshots, and even that could have been MAME...  ;)

The movie Total Recall has a Midnight Resistance machine in it.

And then there's that classic 80's movie Joysticks. Most of the movie takes place inside an arcade. The movie's climax is a score duel on Satan's Hollow.

Also that Friends episode where one of the girls got a Ms. Pac-Man machine and they all got addicted.

There's bound to be lots more...

Isn't there an episode of "2 Guys & A Girl" where they hunt down an arcade game?

And there must be a couple of "Taxi" episodes of Jim addicted to PacMan.

Actually, the joystick on the ground is different than the one hit by the truck.  The truck hit an actual frogger cabinet (with no monitor).

The funny thing bout the Seinfeld "Frogger" and Friends "Ms. Pacman" is that neither games actually have an intial entry screen for the hi scores.

Uhhh...no. They both have hi scores. Frogger has a hi-score table, but there is NO initial entry, just the top 5 scores. The point of the "Seinfeld" episode was that George's INITIALS were still on the machine 15 years later. That is obviously impossible. In the "Friends" episode Chandler writes dirty words on the non-existent intial entry screen (even though initial entry screens are 99% 3 letters, most bad words are 4).

And the most important thing left out......

Neither game held on to the high scores when the game was unplugged

Actually, in the Seinfeld episode George went to pretty elaborate lengths to keep power to the machine because of that.  Supposedly it never lost power all those years.  ::)

I only need 3 letters to get my point across to all of you f-x.
