Infamous... it's pretty F...ing cool
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:22:12 am »
I'd seen the ads and even read some raving reviews but it just never caught my interest but I downloaded the demo and I have to say I was very impressed

A HUGE open world city to explore with no load times ever! ( a little bit of pop in, but still overall very smooth)
Powers that really feel like your a superhero (for the first time in a video game IMHO)
Plus the Demo is pretty deep 3 missions so you really get the feel for the game
The story seems pretty good too (though I just picked up the full game and haven't seen the whole thing yet)

First PS3 exclusive I've been really impressed with (I usually buy the XBOX 360 versions of stuff multi-platform stuff)
love to know what other PS3 owners think

I absolutely loved this game.  (even though I had to play it in 480p)  I'm itching to give it another play through -- this time with the "evil" powers.  I usually get the 360 versions of multi-platform titles too.  This PS3 exclusive is a must have though.

I've been meaning to give Prototype a run through too, but I heard it wasn't as good as Infamous.  I might wait until the price drops to the $30 range.

Gary, since you worked on this game, have you seen the Zero Punctuation review for Left 4 Dead? Funny stuff.

Yeah Portal is still the best next-gen game so far,  too bad it was so short... or maybe that's why it was so good?

although he said it took 2-3 hours I must suck, it took me 6+ hours and I kept looking for that damned CAKE! I know, I know, it was a lie!
I opened it Christmas morning and played straight through till dinner I litereally could not stop. The puzzles were so good and the twisted story so compelling had to see what happened

Gary you worked on those?

NICE WORK!!!!!!

I finally played Portal this weekend. Holy crap that is one of the most awesome games I've ever played with the greatest boss battle and best end credits song EVER.

I have "Still Alive" stuck in my head right now....

Gary, you guys had better be working on more Portal! ;D

I get the hype now. (Though I have no love for the Weighted Companion Cube...)

:)

I didn't open this thread, because I thought it was about a gangster rap game based on Notorious.  The "F...ing cool" didn't help my perception of the thread.

I need to get a game to take my mind off of the cash and hours wasted on buying and trying to play FIFA 09.

A read a review about this game and realized what this thread was about.

I was thinking about getting the Star Wars Force Unleashed for 20 bucks at Toys R Us, but FIFA left a hole in my chest only a great game could fill.

Should I get Star Wars for 20 bucks or Infamous for 50 bucks minus the FIFA trade in?

I really liked the force unleashed(one of a very few games I played all the through in the last couple years) and for $20 i'd say just go for it and wait till infamous is down to $20

Infamous is a better game IMHO I'm totally addicted to it right now, I think I'm about halfway through

unleashed is very linear but the powers are great and the SW universe is awesome

infamous is open world an the powers are just as good (except no lightsaber toss, that never gets old)

to sum up, if your on a budget i'd get unleashed if money was no object then Infamous

Unleashed was 29 bucks, but Infamous was 59, so I went with Unleashed.  I was looking for a fun game where I didn't have to memorize crazy combinations of button clicks to perform actions.  Unleashed was perfect, you learn 2 things before a mission and you practice those powers throughout the mission.

I played Unleashed for 3 hours last night, just slicing droids and throwing storm troopers and rebels around.  I'm not even close to being bored with the game.

Thanks for the recommendation.

When I finish Unleashed I'll be ready for a more immersive game like Infamous.

I want to play Infamous so bad but unfortunately Sony is comprised of a bunch of idiots who decided to not include an internal scaler in the PS3 so all non-1080 games (which is most of them) default to 480p on my television.  My Xbox 360 plays everything beautifully because it has a scaler - like my cable box, my video camera and everything else including the BLU-RAY PLAYER IN THE PS3.  I get mad just thinking about it.  There are at least 5 games I haven't bought because of this issue and I ALWAYS buy multi-platform games on the 360 too.  Idiots.

javeryh,

I feel your pain.  I'm in the same boat.  I really want to buy more PS3 games but don't for the reasons you outlined.  Infamous is the only game I've purchased for the PS3 that doesn't do 1080.

Sony has had a chance to correct the issue with the new PS3 "Slim".  I wonder if they did...

Jav is you TV 480? no it must be 1080, so the tv won't take a 720 signal and upscale it?

something here doesn't make sense

there is a section where you can select the output resolution, have you tried that?

I have it hooked to an xga projector and it runs fine and I have hooked it to my 1080 lcd too and have no problems

Most earlier CRT HDTVs were 1080i, with no 720p ability at all.

I am in the same situation. Sony has lost a lot of sales to me due to this issue.

man that does suck

you'd need an upscaling receiver or upscaling box (as if the ps3 wasn't expensive enough)

what do you do about 720p tv signals

Seems odd to have a HD tv not upcale to its native resolution, I'd say this is a major oversight both by the tv manufacturer and sony

The PS3 is literally the only HD device that I have ever had that didn't have its own scaling ability.

It has some nice games for sure, but as an overall... The PS3 is a half-assed machine with a bunch of partially implemented ideas pasted together.

I agree with this 100%.  It is the only device that I've ever even heard of that didn't have an internal scaler.  I have a Panasonic 480p/1080i plasma TV that I got about 6 years ago - it still looks BEAUTIFUL but it won't play a lot of PS3 games and I refuse to buy them if I can't view them properly.  There are a ton of games for the 360 that I don't have time for anyway.

umm...   and your tv

don't get me wrong. It is SO lame that sony doesn't upscale games, but a HD tv with only 2 resolution options and no upscaling is just as week IMHO
(the original xbox had the same issue though not to many games were over 480p)
and I'm still curious what you do about 720 tv signals

but man an HD CRT that must look frekkin' sweet!

Sure it is lame that it doesn't take a 720 signal, but it is an older set, and 1080i was the standard for CRT televisions, and there are many out there just like mine. It wasn't until plasmas and lcd's took off that 720 became important to support.

That being said...

If I did run into a device that would only feed a 720p signal, then I would just be out of luck, but as I said...

Every other HD device I own (Cable, Satellite, HD-DVD, Blu-ray...)does its own scaling. I do give the original Xbox a pass, as it wasn't really an HD system. Some games supported HD, but not the vast majority. I did indeed miss out on most Xbox HD games though.

So...

I really I don't have to do anything with 720 signals, because nothing I have run into other than the PS3 makes it an issue.

I find it extremely funny that the PS3's pre-launch hype anti Xbox propaganda was heavily touting the PS3's ability to do 1080p.

Yeah...

Right. :(

You have very little on the PS3 that does 1080p, and most of it doesn't even do 1080i. Where as the 360 will scale anything and everything to whatever resolution I choose, whether it be 720p, 1080i or p, or any number of assorted resolutions you find with a VGA cable.

seems silly that Sony couldn't just add a little software to upscale the games
they already do it for dvd's how hard could it be?

Star Wars Unleashed is awesome, but now that I've seen how much fun using different button combos to control lightning in a linear game is, the voices are telling me to buy Infamous.
