Hard Drive Based Spinners
« on: July 13, 2003, 11:06:00 pm »
I'm building a hard drive based spinner.  I found a perfect knob off of an old exercise bike.   It has a 1/4" shaft hole with a bolt to hold shaft in place.

I took apart and old 1.2 gb Westerdigital IDE Hard drive.  I am using the bearing from it.. The hole on the top of the bearing, seems to take a 2mm screw.

So my question is where can I find something that has a 2mm screws .  Maybe if I found a long 2mm screw I could put 1/4" spacer on it.  I check home depot and radioshack but no luck.  I will be hitting the smaller electrical shops in town.

Any Ideas,

Go to Lowes and there is a section where they have all of the screws (hehe-- I said screw...) anyway, they have small threaded studs about 4 inch long and about 2mm (large range of sizes).  Just take the drive parts and the knob and size stuff out.....

Hi there,
The thread in the top of the WD hard drive is a #4-40 thread (at least it was in the WD hard drive I took apart one time).  They are pretty common...you can get them at Canadian Tire in a small pack pretty cheap.

Hope this helps!
Terry.
