Octagonal restriction for Happs HD 8-way Trigger Stick?
« on: August 31, 2009, 01:28:56 pm »
Anyone have any ideas about how to try out octagonal restriction on Happs HD 8-way trigger joysticks?  I'm basically OK with keeping them 8-way but want to feel the corners.  I'm happy enough with Tron's 4-way variants and Assault etc on an 8-way stick as long as I can feel the corners well; I'd prefer true 8-way so I can keep full movement for most of the other trigger stick games I enjoy such as DOT, SDI,

Seems like maybe mounting trigger handles to a JLW or U360 with hollow shafts and a modified JLF GT-Y would be the way to go?  However if possible I'd like to keep the HD 8-way stick, since the rubber grommet feels nice.  And I'm committed to staying in OS X so the U360 option is difficult; there's new U360 mapping software for Macs but it seems to require a good bit of compiling and I'm lost if it's not an easy install.   Basically I'm looking for something like Encryptor's Tron restrictor that's true 8-way.

I'm assuming I'll just need to make a prototype (or just give up the rubber grommet and save some $ by using a cheaper stick), but wanted to get some input before I dive into it.  If it comes down to making a restrictor then does anyone have any ideas about how to go about that?  Carved wood is all I'm coming up with, which seems all wrong; molded plastic would be ideal and I have no idea how to accomplish that.

Thanks!

wood will break unless you use something manufactured.  Even then I'd expect failure at some point.  Plastic would work, but you will have to mold it or cut it from something you have available.  I'd consider cutting something out of sheet metal.  It's not difficult to work with if you have some basic tools and will NOT break (before the joystick anyway).
