Probably a very dumb Mame question
« on: August 30, 2009, 07:56:54 am »
My system has Mame32 113 which I gather is very old now. Things seem to work ok, bar the odd one. Is there anywhere I can still get this version as I would like to have a back up copy somewhere. I've checked around and just seem to be finding 133.

Is there a difference between mame and mame32?

i don't know where to downoad that from, it seems to be hard to find at this point.   mame32 is now known as mameui.   the differenece between mame and mame32, is that mame32 has a gui interface for it.  you can point and click your way through it.  with regular mame, it has to be launched by command line.  you can get other front ends that will work well though.  there is one called easymame that seems to work alot like mame 32.

although if you are using this in a cabinet, i highly recommend looking into command line mame and a nice front end, like MALA.  it just adds another level of awesomeness to having a cabinet when the interface doesnt look like a PC.

here is the mameui website:

Alot of them are available at MARP (http://replay.marpirc.net). If you have an older computer, I don't think I'd upgrade to one of the more current versions. Alot of the stuff they've added makes it run alot slower than earlier versions, unless, of course, there's a specific game you're looking for that's not in an older version ;D

Check joymonkey.com for mame32 archive.

Thanks for the replies and I will take a look the sites mentioned.

My machine is a P4 3Ghz with 512mb, pretty old now. It was probably the first Mame version I had on the machine I think. I do use Hyperspin as a front end. Is there any benefit for me to install v133 as it seems to be ok?

I've only just recently started getting my machine setup and thought it would be a good idea to get everything backed up properly in case of the worst.

Are you unable to back up the existing Mame32 .113 you already have?  Just making a copy of it might be easier than digging around the net for it (theoretically, at least).

yeah..you could always just copy your mame directory to another location and keep that as a backup.

as for that PC, if you added a little ram to it, it should have no problems with newer versions of mame....not that you need to upgrade unless there is a game that has been added that you really want.  i run a p4 3ghz with 2gb of ram, running mame .124 and it runs pretty well.
